You can try Lindows (or Linspire). It is a windows like interface. But, personally I think that distro is very slow and has too much junk in it. The good thing about it is that you just pop in the CD and pretty much hit install and everything is done for you.

Linspire is great for work and multimedia then choose Linspire. Actually it's C-N-R service is a bit overcharged because you also must pay to download free software thru it. Xandros on the other hand doesn't have any advantages than Linspire. The distribution I recommend and suggest for power users or gamers to use is SuSE for stability, ease of use and optimal freedom to do anything. I don't really recommend Mandriva (formerly Mandrake) because it's ridiculed with bugs. Fedora Core is an experimental distribution, it's good for work and server but definitely not unstable and it's not gamer friendly because of such bugs. That's my review on the distros. xboxrulz

I think Xandos is much better. Better features and good support. Specially since ull be paying go for xandos. Otherwise try mandrake ... its now exactly windows but can come close and everything installs on its own like in windows ... no mounting or graphic card problems ... Sorry now they r called Mandriva Check out www.mandriva.com Cheers

The are only a few things you need to know when trying linux. 1) Filesystem structure and hierarchy. 2) Similar apps to windows. There is a list of 'similar' applications to make you more easy to use. This is the list. And to understand the filesystem, I recomend to see 'The Linux filesystem explained'. Cheers.

Thanks for all the replies... I've just tried Linspire 4.5 on VMWare... It took me sometime to install VMware, and also installing Linspire on the emulated harddrive by VMware... After installing, the startup of Linspire just hang there and the scroll-lock and number-lock key LEDs on my keyboard kept flashing... I removed the emulated drive and redo the whole procedure thinking it might be something foreign that disturbs the installation, but the same thing happens... The startup of Linspire stops when a message states : Kernel Panic : Attempt to kill initAny dudes know what's happening? Here's a video of it that I've captured : http://www.inspiron.trap17.com/linspire.wmv

Could be, but if you're new to linux Mandriva is the easyest way to learn how to use linux and then you can go to other distributions. If you go like first to let's say Gentoo or Debian I'm not shure if someone who don't know anything about linux and how to make something in linux will know even how to install it and then how to use it.

I still don't suggest Mandriva because it's really really one of the most bugged up Linux distribution I've ever seen. xboxrulz

The easyest version of the linux is mandrake or mandriva, and you can personalize the desktop that it would look like that you are running windows on it. With linux and the KDE environment (also with GNOME and others-but this two are most developed and used) you can personalize your desktop and all the operating system as you wish. I suggest you to try Mandriva LE 2005 (that is the newest version of Mandrake linux avaliable now) You can download it from their website (you have to pay a little fee I guess) or find a mirror which provides free download (it's open source so it's a legal download), or you can buy a linux magazine with this version of linux included. Good luck!

Lycoris? It's worst than Linspire! I still say, if you want a "real" Linux system without features cutted down, go for SuSE, Fedora or Ubuntu. xboxrulz

A kernel panic is usually due to a hardware issue. With my experience with Linux that has been the issue. What is your system specs? This where Knoppix usually comes in handy, or any live cd. This helps to check to see if Linux and your hardware is compatible. Linspire, from what I have heard is pretty descent, but you tend to have to pay for a lot of stuff that seems like bloat. However, they do have an easier way of installing software from their click -n -run wharehouse. Another good diistro, which I used a few years ago when I was a newbie was Lycoris, www.lycoris.org. Their forums are good for a lot of Linux help as well. Anyway, if you could, list your hardeware specs here and we can see if we can see what is up.

If Mac Osx Is Best With Hardware, Where Does Linux Lie?
(5) Here's a good question: Is Linux better at utilizing hardware efficiently to produce optimal
performance out of your components. I hear a lot about Mac OSX being so much better with Intel
processors and yada yada, but I don't know if this is true or if a bunch of Mac elitists said a
bunch of crap and ran with it. I don't think there are actual comparable benchmarks, but if
there are, where does Linux lie in the hardware efficiency race? (Or is it dependent on which Linux
distribution it is, like how XP still beats Vista in performance?)....

What Made You Switch To Linux?

which distros are good for what, I soon realized my current distro was great for Linux noobs. So

learning curve. Since then I've been using Slackware as my main OS and couldn't ....

Ubuntu Linux As Free Operating System Alternative
linux operating system (46) About three years ago I decided to learn how to use Linux and after a lot of posts on a forum I
tried Ubuntu Linux as it was recommended as a good first Linux distro. Ubuntu is not the easiest
Linux distro to use but with its unmatched forum community support it is one of the easiest to learn
to use. One of the problems with learning Linux is that a lot of users have an attitude that Linux
should be a free Windows knock off which it is not. Ubuntu is build on a Linix core or kernel and is
a different Open Source and free as in to use operating system. This brings us to t....

Memory Trick To Speedup Windows Xp
(28) Here is one of the not so known method for free-up the RAM to make the Windows run faster. When
programs run in Windows XP, they frequently use what are called DLLs (Dynamic-Link Libraries). These
contain shared programming instructions and other files like icons, graphics, sounds, etc. that
different applications use in order to run. DLLs are stored in RAM whenever the applications load
them; when you quit a program, XP is supposed to release the DLL from memory. But some DLLs can get
stuck. Here is the method to mend this up. Step 1: You can force Windows XP to re....

How Do I Switch From Gnome To Kde?
Ubuntu Linux (6) Hey. I use Windows mainly, as I use games and graphical programs the most. However, I use Linux a
bit, just for programming and other things like that. I'm not that good at programming and
linux though ;_;... Well, I decided that the main reason I don't like to use it is that it
looks so alien, and I hate how GNOME looks. I hear that if I move to KDE I'll be sacrificing
some performance or whatnot. I have this really crazy linux zealot friend who preaches the linux
gospel to me, and will attempt to beat down any reason why I like Windows. I would ask ....
