| | I want to know which OS is better Windows or Linux. If you choose Linux please post the distributor because I would like to know. I'm using Windows right now and very used to it. Linux I differently not used too but if you can try to convince me I might switch to Linux (or try to install it as a second OS (I have failed before doing it this way) or another computer, etc.) |

Fedora 2 for me. Debian and Mandrake are also very neat distributions. Linux is both free and open soruce - ok, not *really* free because the boxed sets cost some money - and you could, strictly speaking, download it from the net, but you'd still be spending on the internet bill, and more importantly, your time. Linux support groups are extensive and are all over the place. It's reassuring to know that whenever you want help, someone's bound to do give it to you I personally have a soft corner for anything released under the GPL; so I'll obviously prefer Linux. Off hand conversations may lead you to think that Linux won't stand the test of time, because most s/w is created for the Windows platform, especially game engines and such. However, I would ask you to consult reliable sources and judge for yourself. Some such sources are listed at the end of this message. Finally, you can always partition your disk, that's what I've done - 20 GB for Windows 98 and the rest for Linux. Remember, you can setup Linux so that all data from the drives allotted to Windows can be accessed while working on the Linux platform The Linux HomepageThe Linux MagazineThe Linux JournalAnother Linux MagazineLinux World, yet another magazine.Good luck, and keep us posted

OK well i was exactly like you were. All i used to use was windows but then i started to do a good amount of programming (for the web and software) so i decided to try linux out. Now, i run both linux and windows on my computer and switch between them depending on what i want to do. Personally i use Suse Linux because i like its look and feel and it wasnt very hard to learn. I have used both Mandrake and Fedora before and i liked them but i liked suse better.

I think Linux is good for programmers or people who want a stable and virus-safe computer. But in my opinion, Windows XP is even better, I think it's because I use it since I've got my first computer.

xboxrulz: right on! but why is your nickname xboxrulz? o.O Back on topic: linux and it's children are usually only used in server envirnoments, but lately been aimed at the desktop. Knoppix is an example of such. If you want an easy to use distro, knoppix or DSL (D*mn small linux). If you want something stable I would go with Gentoo or Slackware. Just my useless opinion

Mmhh I think windows XP is crap compared to most linux destributions, but some destibutions arent as good as windows XP... But I think most people that claim windows is better havent used linux, or used a crappy free destribution found on some bonus CD from a computer magazine

wow, about 2 months not being here and this post has expanded to two pages, anyways, let's start the bunson burner and let's roll: [I] R Crazy Idiot: Ah, an ignorant Windows user who thinks that someone will make a virus once it comes popular. In Linux, if you have ever paid attention to it, it has a sophisticated permission system which will restrict maliculous software from ever altering system files and it will not delete any files that it DOES NOT HAVE PERMISSION to. Also, if you have SELinux installed, all services and software are locked in into a chroot jail and if a code tries to brake through, it will be automatically terminated. Also, depending how you configured Linux, it can crash easily. Yet, if you leave it to default settings from the distributor, it will have less chance of being crashed. All operating system crashes, but Linux crashes less than Windows because Linux handles the memory better. Crashing also depends on your hardware. Windows and Linux will crash if you have a crappy machine. Dragonfly: The point of Linux is NOT to be a replacement for Windows, it is AN ALTERNATIVE for Windows. That's all I have say for now. xboxrulz

Windows Vista Sp1 Blocks Antivirus Programs

If Mac Osx Is Best With Hardware, Where Does Linux Lie?
(5) Here's a good question: Is Linux better at utilizing hardware efficiently to produce optimal
performance out of your components. I hear a lot about Mac OSX being so much better with Intel
processors and yada yada, but I don't know if this is true or if a bunch of Mac elitists said a
bunch of crap and ran with it. I don't think there are actual comparable benchmarks, but if
there are, where does Linux lie in the hardware efficiency race? (Or is it dependent on which Linux
distribution it is, like how XP still beats Vista in performance?)....

What Made You Switch To Linux?
(32) I first tried Linux a few years ago, not because I was completely against Windows or anything like
that, but just because I had some free time on my hands. I started off with Mandrake 9.0 which was
very user friendly and Windows-like. After reading through a bunch of message boards and learning
which distros are good for what, I soon realized my current distro was great for Linux noobs. So
then I decided to try something a little more advanced like Slackware which I knew had a steep
learning curve. Since then I've been using Slackware as my main OS and couldn't ....
Start Multiple Programs With One Shortcut

Reducing Windows Vista Start Menu Programs Response Time.

Ubuntu Linux As Free Operating System Alternative
linux operating system (46) About three years ago I decided to learn how to use Linux and after a lot of posts on a forum I
tried Ubuntu Linux as it was recommended as a good first Linux distro. Ubuntu is not the easiest
Linux distro to use but with its unmatched forum community support it is one of the easiest to learn
to use. One of the problems with learning Linux is that a lot of users have an attitude that Linux
should be a free Windows knock off which it is not. Ubuntu is build on a Linix core or kernel and is
a different Open Source and free as in to use operating system. This brings us to t....

Memory Trick To Speedup Windows Xp
(28) Here is one of the not so known method for free-up the RAM to make the Windows run faster. When
programs run in Windows XP, they frequently use what are called DLLs (Dynamic-Link Libraries). These
contain shared programming instructions and other files like icons, graphics, sounds, etc. that
different applications use in order to run. DLLs are stored in RAM whenever the applications load
them; when you quit a program, XP is supposed to release the DLL from memory. But some DLLs can get
stuck. Here is the method to mend this up. Step 1: You can force Windows XP to re....

How Do I Switch From Gnome To Kde?
Ubuntu Linux (6) Hey. I use Windows mainly, as I use games and graphical programs the most. However, I use Linux a
bit, just for programming and other things like that. I'm not that good at programming and
linux though ;_;... Well, I decided that the main reason I don't like to use it is that it
looks so alien, and I hate how GNOME looks. I hear that if I move to KDE I'll be sacrificing
some performance or whatnot. I have this really crazy linux zealot friend who preaches the linux
gospel to me, and will attempt to beat down any reason why I like Windows. I would ask ....
Sata Hard Drive Not Recognized By Windows
