basically what download managers do is they manage your downloads. lets say you want to download 10 files at once, a download manager will help you organize them. it will download a few at a time and the remaining ones will be put in queue. well its up to you, most download managers allow you to change the settings. another thing download managers do is make multiple connections to the server you're downloading from, each connection downloading seperate parts of the file you want, thus you can download files faster..however some sites like rapidshare don't allow multiple connections.

fire fox's download manager is literally just a download manager..it jus shows you your downloads so it does'nt get cluttered up..and the most you can do is cancel or pause it. some download managers i recommend are: Download Accelerator Plus and FlashGet, if you're interested, google them for more info
