What Is Phase Change Cooling? - and how does it work?

I first came across phase change cooling when I bought the Zalman CNPS9500 heat sink. Basically the base of it (which is pure copper) is connected to what is being called "Heat Pipes (also pure copper)" and then a bunch of little copper "Fins" are attached to that. The fan sits perpendicular not parallel to the base which is why I bought it. I was curious as to how it could cool better than some water cooling that I decided to do a little research. I found out that the "Pipes" are actually hollow and they are filled with some type of liquid that at room temperature is almost a gas. While this is in liquid form it sits right at the base of the heat sink, on top of the CPU and main heat source. As the CPU heats up, the liquid heats up and goes through a "Phase Change" hence the name Phase Change cooling. The matter is now in a gas form and has taken the heat energy away from the heat source and "floated" out to where the fan and fins are, the fan and fins cool the pipes, thus cooling the gas. The gas then goes through another phase change and turns back into a liquid. The liquid is now heavy again and so it sinks back down to the heat source. The cycle repeats over and over, so the heat sink doesn’t use any pumps or condensers because it is all contained in the pipes. As effective as water cooling, yet not as bulky and uses less power to operate, plus you don’t have to worry about leaks. If I am wrong about anything please let me know so that I can have a better understanding.
Intresting. I've never heard of something like this before. It sounds like a new gadget for me to buy!
How much was the heatsink?
The heatsink I bought was about $60 at newegg. There are also a lot of other products out that are using this new phase change cooling technology, like the new Asus A8N32-SLI deluxe Motherboarduses heatpipes to cool the northbridge and take the heat into the path of natural airflow. I know that many of the Zalman heatsinks and other graphics coolers use heatpipes. There are a number of products that use heatpipes and I would recommend any of them to you. many can be found on Newegg. I also know that many of the sythe brand heatsinks are using heatpipes as well.
I dont know what exactly the substance is but I can find out. I sent a request to Zalman asking that very question. I beleive I will get an answer unless they use a special one and dont want to give away information. It sounds like a cool idea (pardon the pun), and I can see why it would be so effective and expensive!
The gas you explained about sounds very much like nitrogen or hydrogen... I would say nitrogen because it turns into a gas on contact with the air, and also it's environmentally friendly.

The gas doesnt actually power the fan or make contact with the air. all the gas is contained in the pipes, and it cycles through it. the gas never escapes otherwise you would have to refill it every time. It is the same idea that is used in air-conditionars and refridgerators. the fan is only used to cool one end of the pipe that is then used to cool the gas back into a liquid. the processor is the condensor that turns the liquid into a gas.
cOOl, i just thought the name "What Is Phase Change Cooling?" sounded interesting and then i read it and im like "Wow". Well explained and thats really cool how it works... Good job!
so does this offer dramaticly better cooling for the CPU? mine at the moment (due to being summer) tends to hit higher temps of 50-59 degrees pretty effortlessly. Would anyone who's ucrrently got one of these new fangled heatsinks tell me if it would be worth investing in one?
i'm really not keen on upgrading to liquid cooling. . . . because i simply don't trust myself to do a good job lol.
This is not a Win/Linux/Mac dispute, rather pointing out a few minor things that I find really
annoying in Windows OS and I'd rather change if I had the chance/knowledge (disclaimer: I mainly
refer to winxp but I've used almost all other versions, I have some experience with Linux and
almost never used a Mac OS) copying/moving files: ever tried to copy a folder containing one or
more corrupted files? if I were the OS I'd just skip those and copy the good ones, then prompt a
message "file x, y, z were not copied we're sorry for the inconvenience caused".....
Hi, I knew nothing about chaos until I signed up (and paid for my web space Order #2486 >
Invoice #6589) with you and I drive in London for a living ... 8 hours after sign up and still
don't know whether my User name and password work on cPanel or anywhere on this site for that
matter. I would suggest that the admin send out an introductory eMail on sign up with all our info
and put a sticky on at the start page of the forum containing standard info for all users. Like FTP

Hy, I was wondering if someone know a solution for my task...I won't bother to look the net for
these if I get no response here. I'm using a Motorola modem my motorola modem that the ISP
gave me.. and in contract they say there's a dynamic address (this only for fiber, for cable
they do not specify) but I only get the same IP address everytime I connect; some clients told that
they were able to get dynamic or other IP addresses after a few months.. anyway I wonder what can I

I recently built a computer, everything seems to be alright with it, except one thing, CTRL + C just
won't work. I'm running a Windows Windows Xp Pro SP2, and Ctrl + X and Ctrl + V work fine.

I have tried tons of times and i can not get it too work. I did't even know about this until
Paul from Trap 17 used it to help me with something on my site. Whenever i try it, it never
connects. I have tried all three ways. Email, MSN, and download the file and send it. Both computers
are connected to the internet. On microsoft's site they have a lot of people with the same

Well, though a way for such things has never been discovered, I'm giving my idea for a perpetual
motion device, though it was originally thought up as a device for overunity. It's pretty
simple - attatch a generator directly to an electric motor, then run a cord to the electric motor,

hey, i use to use Linux DC++ to download music from some hubs and i usually download it to
/home/downloads/ and then i move the files to my collection on another HDD a sata one, on
sda3/music/ but when i move the files using krushader root mode they become posessed by root and
amarok can't play them displaying a locker on the file's icon. I tried to " chmod 774 music
", where music is my music directory, as root in konsole but no luck. What should i do to make a
whole directory accessible from amarok as user?....

Hello, Can anyone help me? I own a Motorola Razr V3 and the only key that works is the on off
button. I have never dropped it and i take excellent care of my phones. It was working fine for a
few months and one day it just stopped working. The screen still works and I can awnser phone calls
by opening the flip part, but I can't call anyone or text or anything that requires pushing a

the developement to C: (eg. c:/development) The folder c:/development and the folders under it have
Read-Only permisions. I need to remove that restriction. I press right-button, i unchecked the
read-only check-box and i apply to this folder and folders under it. Whe it finisehd i click ok. Whe
i press the right button again i discovered that the folder has still the read-only attribute. So it
