| | Windows XP is very stable when it comes for gaming. However, for the 3D rendering, I would say Mac. Btw, will Windows Longhorn be a better software for gaminf than XP? Well...I hope so.... |

I doubt it, Longhorn is supposed to replace the server platform for windows, it may be better for hosting games off of but any OS is good for that, you dont need anything special.

Longhorn requires you to have the latest computer technology, therefore, you must buy a new computer. Plus, they must be TCPA compatible or else Longhorn cannot run. xboxrulz

Right now it would have to be Windows XP. This is easily chosen because almost all of the games that we play today can function only on Windows platforms. Later on there might be newer and better games that also function on Linux, Unix, and others.

OpenGL software is much better rendered and smoother than DirectX software. Plus the X server on Linux has a better framebuffer. Up to 10x faster than the WIN32 API framebuffer! xboxrulz

Until every game package has both the ability to be run on Linux and Windows with little to no fiddling, will be the day I use primarily Linux. But, there are too few games that support linux (kudos to the bioware crew for making NWN linux-compatible, though). Add to the fact that ATi make terrible drivers for Linux (I was running a game that required 3D rendering and it ran extremely choppy). Heh, I saw some laughable comments previously to the tune of, "Windows is suckful 'cause it has viruses taking memory, and crashes...etc, etc..." ANY OS will suck if you don't know what processes you have running in the background. And alexia's to comment, it doesn't matter what operating system you use, the same program will generally, if not always has the same memory and cpu requirements. Though, XP -does- have a bigger footprint than other OS's, it is not a bad OS for running games (best one I've ever used for gaming, if you ask me). Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

I voted for Windows XP because I really don't know which is better exactly, but I love windows XP's interface it is very easy to use, but i would have to say that windows 2000 is more tweakable (is that even a word? lol) So I dunno? "The world may never know."

My vote goes to Windows XP only because it is the most compatible with different games... It is more compatible with the higher level graphics cards and gaming essentials. That's just my personal opinion. I use Windows XP right now, but only because all the software and hardware I use aren't compatible with Linux.

About three years ago I decided to learn how to use Linux and after a lot of posts on a forum I
tried Ubuntu Linux as it was recommended as a good first Linux distro. Ubuntu is not the easiest
Linux distro to use but with its unmatched forum community support it is one of the easiest to learn
to use. One of the problems with learning Linux is that a lot of users have an attitude that Linux
should be a free Windows knock off which it is not. Ubuntu is build on a Linix core or kernel and is
a different Open Source and free as in to use operating system. This brings us to t...

Linux - Why It Fails As A Desktop Operating System?
- (34)
Linux is becoming such a craze nowadays that not even a single day passes without one or other
distribution releasing a new version. But why is it failing so miserably in the desktop arena. The
answer lies in three reasons. 1. The plethora of distributions -
Redhat,Debian,Ubuntu,Suse,Gentoo,Knoppix - everbody and his uncle is coming out with new ones. 2.
The lack of backward compatibility - I had Redhat 7.3 running. I upgraded to Redhat 9. Many
applications had to be recompiled. You ask my mom to recompile applications - She will throw out
Linux and take Windows anyday. ...

Help! has anyone ever heard of a hard drive deleting a Operating system? I have a old HP that I
had been playing with, trying to fix it up for a friend young son to mess around with. It had no
Operating system in it to start with. I had a old hard drive laying around that had windows 98 in
it which was perfect for the old HP due to memory and being just a 286. Well, I removed the old HD
and put in the one with the 98. Booted up great. even got on the net with it for a bit, then I had
to run out for a bit so I shut it down. When I got back, I turned it back on to in...

mere reason that I can't afford the 100 dollar Windows XP. I'm still in high school and I
don't have a job that's why I still can't afford all my desires. But I hear Ubuntu is
pretty good and even Dell is planning to use it for its future computers. I'm a gamer and a web
developer and programmer. I have no concerns about IDE's such as NetBeans or Aptana and other
Open source IDE's because of linux support. Instead I'm more concerned with...

Hi everyone, The last 3 games I have purchased (Blood Rayne 2, Prince of Persia2, and now
Dragonshard) all fail to load. When I try to load the game, the cursor changes to the game cursor,
but the rest of the screen goes blank. Dragonshard doesn't eve get that far. It gives me the
same problem, but in the installation screen. If I do a clean book, which is outlined here , the
games seem to work. I was just wondering if anyone out there know which "background programs" might
be doing this. Many thanks,kvarnerexpress...

I think Linux sweeping the world was a bit of a premature prediction (what everyone in relatively
intellectual circles was saying in the late 90's and very early 2000's). Microsoft with a
true oligopoly that has crushed the chances of any third party OS, like BeOS, one of the most
promising OSes of the 90's IMHO. Linux and Unix really need a serious internal structural revamp
(like the NT system does of course), perhaps even a change to a server based OS; I guess that would
sort of be a total rewrite of all the code though Copied from "Olorix" on http://fo...
