The connection speed you can acquire is limited by money first, and then by power consumption, and then by available space. A single desktop computer probably can't get the full benefit of anything faster than, say, 100 megabits per second. One way you could experience that kind of speed in your home without laying new cables would be to use a thin client to connect to an off-site server in a server farm which had its own private internet backbone. Server farms like that are sure to have a nice fast connection - much faster that the average individual user needs or wants.
On the more practical side, I have a friend who has cable and DSL, and is using both connections simultaneously. He is paying for it though, to the tune of about $70 per month if I remember correctly.
The fastest internet connections worldwide are using fiber optic cables to transmit the data. If you are wealthy, and feel the need or want for an unnecessarily large data pipe, you could pay to have one of said optic cables installed up to your doorstep. But it would cost a lot of money.
So, your limiting factors, in increasing order of difficulty, are money, power consumption, and available space.

(If you took things to a theoretical extreme, you would reach a point where the information could not be processed fast enough with current technology, and until further advances developed, going faster would be meaningless.)

Talk for free on the internet (7)
This has been available for a while, but I only recently. This is a Voice over IP program that
allows you to talk to anyone on the internet anywhere provided they have the same program. The
software is free. The real amazing thing is the new feature you can now have real phone number. That
means someone can call you from a normal landline and you can call other landline numbers. They have
also just added the live video software also for free, so if you have a web cam you can see the

  12. Broadband In Gas
Carrying internet over gas pipelines (5)
I recently read about a company called Nethercomm that is promoting a broadband in gas technology.
Apparently, this company has some patents pending on devices that can be installed in gas pipelines
that go to commercial and residential buildings to provide the "last mile" connection for broadband.
It appears the technology is based on radio frequencies propogated down the gas pipe as a wave
guide. Nethercomm boasts data rates up to 40 Mbps are possible to the home. Anyone know of any
actual implementation/trials of this technology going on presently?....
  13. Internet Telephony - Any Experiences?

I was wondering if anybody had any experience with internet telephony or voIP. I've tried Skype
with mixed results, and recently read an article about a number of fairly large companies who have
adopted it as a money saving venture. In the UK BT announced yesterday a new phone service whereby
when you take your phone outside your home it uses the Vodafone network, and when you use it at home
it automatically uses voIP over bradband. Sounds interesting.......

  15. Internet Explorer.... With Tabs!
    (22)
Yes, it’s finally true. Stuck on like a big band aid, courtesy of MSN Toolbar 1.2, we have IE with
tabs. Well ahead of the release of Internet Explorer 7, Microsoft has done what they just absolutely
needed to do, and have provided tabbed browsing for Internet Explorer. Things are fairly undeveloped
at this stage, but reports talk about it running fast and supporting most features you'd want.
"It's a more powerful functionality in a pretty robust tool offering, which already has a

Internet Explorer 7 only for XP (26)
Micrsoft confirmed what we've already expected. The new-coming explorer IE 7 will only be
compatible with windows XP and newer. The two reasons why old dinosaurs that still use Windows 2000
and lower won't be able to use the new IE are: 1. state in which is the extended support of
Windows 2000 and 2. mostly of technical nature (IE 7 is goin to have a few security updates and

incompatibility with other versions of Windows) Source: Slashdot ....
  19. Voip(voice Over Internet Protocol)
    real money saver (16)
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is the communication technology of the future for sure. Legacy
technology carries voice signals over analog circuits and lines. Voice over IP converts the analog
signal to digital and transports the signal to the receiver where it is converted back from digital
to analog and the receiver hears the sender's voice. This provides a more efficient and
economical means of communication. I have know VOIP for quite a some time since i started online.
Most of the time i use msn messeger or yahoo messeger to chat with my friends. Recently,....

How fast is too fast (4)
Slow start to speedy net services Service providers are in a race to be the fastest Faster
broadband in the UK is becoming a reality as more internet providers offer super-fast services. Some
lucky Britons can already take advantage of UK Online's 8 megabits per second service, which was
launched in November 2004. BT Retail has announced that it will trial the same speed service, with
a national rollout by year end. Other service providers are expected to follow suit and a glut of
