Opensuse 11 is a good Operating system..It is a fre opensource Operating System.Having good look also.
You are in luck. May I suggest Linspire, a Linux distribution made incredibly simple to use and it looks just like Windows. It normally costs £49 but you can get it for free by clicking here and following the instructions. They've got some offer on after someone released some software called 'Freespire' which caused confusion so Linspire is free for a few days. I suggest using BitTorrent to download it, it goes much faster. Its incredibly quick and easy to use.
Not really.
You're downloading an entire OS. Windows is around 1.5 gigs. So I'd consider small .isos and such a good size, even if they're around 500 mb. Panda - Recomends Debian. Google it - Panda
Isn't there a knoppix in which you can install onto your hard drive?
I would recommend Suse Linux 9.3 as a free OS that runs well. It has a huge support base so when you run into trouble you just have to google it. Plus, it is one of the few that are backed by profitable companies so it seems like it is here to stay.

I'm assuming that you run an intel-based system, or a AMD system, not a 64 bit processor.
Most likely i386. If you've got a 64bit AMD processor, go ia64. Panda
If your talking processors, which I'm sure you are, I have an intell based prosessor. It's a pentium 4, so I'll go with that. Thanks.

re the best free os
What Is The Best Free Os I think linux is the best not becouse its more secure than windows though it is not becouse its more reliable than windows though it is not becouse its free wich it is but becouse of the freedom , you can install a bare bones system and chose only what you whant to add , you can go for the kitchen sink distro where every thing under the sun is there already or some where inbetween the two you can run a source based distro like gentoo or a binary based distro like debian there are thousaands of difrent flavers of linux to chose from so you can have exactly what you want or need your not locked into anything for me debian is the right thing I can install a bare bones sysem and add what I like or if I feel like it I can install the whole shibang thats why I feel linux is the best os on top of all that its functional not just for server but also for desktop use -reply by paptwilight
I recommend ubuntu. I tried it out once but didn't get to play with it for long. It has a great addons and the look is awesome for a free OS. Probably because it's linux. Here is the link for the download page http://www.Ubuntu.Com/getubuntu/download.
best free os like windows
What Is The Best Free Os Try REACTOS its like win2000, super fast instal and only 30mb dl. Comes in live cd, and vmware additions as well if you like windows use it its free and legal. 32bit only -reply by tbl82
A warez version of Win2k is the best (windows XP without fancy effects and Product Activation). I was using one awhile ago before my HD died and I lost the Bootleg install CD. Now I run an official version of WinXP Home so I'm all legal now (PLZ DON'T BAN ME!!!).
