| | May I add a bit of setting up advice for those who would love to use this shoutbox. Whilst trying to get it working, I got two lines of something like "Warning: chmod(): Operation not permitted in /home/projim/public_html/main/TFsBOX/index.php on line 38" - actually it was exactly this more or less 
i managed to get rid of one, by allowing write permissions to shouts.log
i got rid of the second one by allowing write permissions, in the same way, to ipban.log
and thus it works fully!  - grrreeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaat! |

By granting write permissions on files, you may be opening a hole for crackers to take advantage of - that's why I always leave my config file for Mambo at 644 permissions (which don't allow public writing). I'm not sure how they could take advantage of those permissions, but I suppose it could be done. The only real way to remedy this is to somehow change the owner of the files to the user the Web server runs as, which I'm not sure how to do.

Ok, v2.5 has been released. Suggestions Applied:- Edit/delete own shouts within a one-minute time frame.
- Maximize (view all) shouts//Minimize (view last 6) shouts.
- Hover/Onclick bbcode and smiley menu appearance.*
- Name filter.
- Wordwrap.
- Ability to add/remove word filters in Admin CP.
Coming Soon:- MySQL Database-driven Version.

*To change, you must define the variable '$effect' in 'index.php'. IMPORTANT: If you have a previous version installed, and upgrade to this version, you MUST clear all shouts in order to make things compatible.
@[michaelper22]: Changing file permissions is not much of a security issue--especially if you know what you're doing. Besides, 666 is way safer than 777. 666 is what is required for 3 files, in this version.

I created a tutorial on file permissions, and you will see that 666 or 777 is bad if you read it. See it at /home/busstop/public_html. I'm not going to argue about permissions anymore, or at least in this topic. And on the matter of an SMF version, I would greatly appreciate it. I will surely add it to my arsenal of things to play around with.

Truefusion, I like what I see there. Nice job, however, (you saw this coming, didn't you?) and it may just be a Browser issue, but hovering over the bbcodes link shuts down my Browser with an error that the Browser sends to its Home page. I am on an (admittedly) antique machine, but still, should the on-hover close a Browser window? Imac with OS9.1 and Netscape 7 Browser

Ah, i should have tested it on Netscape. I'll check it out now in Netscape, but all other browsers (Firefox, Opera, MSIE) work fine with it. I don't understand why it crashed your Netscape browser. EDIT: Just tested it in Netscape, and it didn't close on me. Must be a problem in v7, since i have v8.1 for Netscape. Though, i did notice a quick blink of the menus upon hover, but it shouldn't be anything to worry about.

It is very nice, but I think I'd prefer if it used ajax rather than submitting, and if you must submit, can't you have it submit to the same page?? Really annoying seeing that "your post has been submitted" every time i say something  Other than that the shoutbox is GREAT!

Believe me, i've tried to do this, but for some reason the shouts don't get updated, and you have to refresh the page, and the way it is now is more automatic. It must be a cache problem, but i've even tried disabling cache through PHP headers—that didn't work as well. So for now, i have no choice but to leave it as it is. As for AJAX, i haven't taken the time to learn JavaScript, but if anyone manages to get my shoutbox to work with their AJAX script, PM me it.

i'm waiting for the mysql driven shoutbox. i'm kinda not into the file writing as of the moment, that's why i'm not updating the shoutbox on my blog.

The MySQL version will support a user and log-in system, so expect some time before this newer version of the shoutbox comes out.
As for the SMF add-on, so to provide some convenience for me and after finishing this version of the shoutbox, i'ma check to see if there is one already for SMF and use that as reference.
