Tribes remains, in my humble opinion, one of the absolute best online first person shooters ever. Despite the fact that it was created over six years ago (a life time in computer land) it still retains a descent size player base. In fact, it has more active players than the two sequels (tribes 2, and tribes: Vengance) combiened!

If you want something with a high learning curve play base or the HaVoC mod--but be warned that there are lots of vetrans around. If you want something more fast paced (more action...e.g. killing etc) try the annihilation mod, or renagades.
