| | When adding in my old 40gig HD i had a lot of trouble formating it, due to the fact it had been partitioned. So i used my XP boot cd to reformat it, Somehow it added a boot option saying there was a OS on the hd. When booting up my pc i would get 2 option and would have to select the second one. I found out how to swap them so mine is the top option (Meaning i dont have to be here to change option when pc loads) but i want to know how to remove the second option. Any help would be greatly aprciated |

in the root of the C: drive you should find a file called boot.ini, open it with notepad. it should have the variable 'default' set to something, like CODE default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
in this case partition(1) is the one under the [operating systems] section there will be two lines in your case, remove the line that is NOT the default. Alternatively, a safer approach, change the value of timeout to 0 both should work, the first one may accidentally erase the default OS choice rendering your actual OS unbootable.

1. If there is any data on the 40GB drive you need then back it up. 2. Delete all of the data on the 40GB drive. 3. Go to Start->Run, type "msconfig", press Enter (or click OK) 4. Click the "BOOT.INI" tab 5. Click the "Check all boot paths" button 6. It should tell you that the path to Windowx XP on the 40GB drive is invalid. It will ask if you want to remove it. Click "Yes" 7. Restart the system and make sure it works. Tell me how it goes. Hope this helps.

Ubuntu 7.10 Boot Issues
why does this happen? (5) hey trapsters, a few months ago, i reinstalled my laptop because i noticed it was getting
considerably laggy. i first installed xp, however i didn't have the time to install ubuntu as
well (dual boot) until around about a week ago. for some reason, however, my ubuntu 7.10 takes an
awfully long time to boot. firstly, after the splash (ubuntu logo and loading bar), the common unix
printing system (cupsd) takes about 30secs - 1min to load. then, once typing in my username and
password, ubuntu goes through this very strange process of desktop switching before i actuall....

wondering whether or not I could run Vista and Linux on the same hard drive. I have at least 70GB of
space left and my C partition contaisn about 103 GB. I just bought the laptop a few days ago. I am
just wanting to know this because I am thinking of getting Linux and possibly an exte....

Dual Booting Vista And Xp With This?
(9) Ok, so I've done some looking around trying to see if it's possible I could dual-boot my pc
with Windows XP Home and Vista Ultimate Edition (x64). Well, I know it's possible, but I'm
not understanding many guides I read because many people have mentioned assorted stuff like
requiring two hard drives (I only have one 250GB one), and other assorted stuff like software
I'd need to supply certain space to the two separate partitions. I was thinking of making my
Windows XP be more of the serious partition, and having Vista be the more media-centered one, ....

Great for learning Linux (0) Ever want to learn linux but you didn't have a second machine to run it on? You can make a
virtual machine that boots from a virtual CD-ROM image and do this in less than 5 minutes. Here is
a great one to start with, it only takes up 50 MB on your machine: Main Page:

DSL image that uses QEMU (from here: http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distri....1-embedded.zip

Apple Boot Camp
Dual boot Mac OS with Windows (2) We all know that Windows XP can now be installed with Windows XP. Now Apple made an offical dual
boot program that allows you to boot into Windows XP with ease. It's official with support.
However it's still in beta. I guess in future, Windows users may get an Apple computer instead
because you can use a Mac OS any time you want. Although I'm not a Mac user, I think I'll
consider getting an Apple next. I can learn Mac OS as well, while using Windows XP for my everyday
chores. QUOTE Available as a download beginning today, Boot Camp allows users with....

Hardware Changes And Now Winxp Doesn't Boot!
(4) I've just performed a near-complete upgrade of my main computer. New mobo, processor, more RAM.
I kept both my HDs and would like to continue using the Windows install I was using before. While I
have definitely not passed the hardware test (Windows's way of making sure you haven't
borrowed a friend's HD by checking to see if the hardware is the same as when it was installed)
I've read that SP1 and up will let you boot into safe mode and reactivate. The way it is now,
all I get is the Safe Mode/LastKnown/Start normally screen. If I choose anything, t....
Restarts In Middle Of Boot-up Wxp-pro
(7) My computer has just developed an annoying little quirk: it spontaneously restarts in the middle of
Windows start-up. I have Windows XP Pro SP2, and every time it gets to the part of booting up where
the little gray bars fill up across the bottom of the screen (right before the Windows logo is
displayed on a black background), it will all of a sudden just restart and go back to the BIOS
screen. So basically, it can never get past this point, and fails to give me any sort of message or
information as to what exactly the problem is. Even stranger is how the problem start....
Windows Won't Boot
(5) Ever since I reinstalled Windows a few days ago, I've kept the installation disk in my CD drive.
Last night, I removed it thinking that I finally had a stable installation. When I booted this
morning, I got a "non-system disk" error. I rebooted several times just to see if it was a fluke,
but I got the error every time. Then, on a hunch, I put my installation CD back in and Windows
booted without complaint. May I ask why the f*ck Windows will only boot with the installation disk
in the CD drive? I have never heard of that type of situation in my entire life. Al....
