Windows Or Linux - Which is better, Windows or Linux?

MarCrush
I want to know which OS is better Windows or Linux. If you choose Linux please post the distributor because I would like to know. I'm using Windows right now and very used to it. Linux I differently not used too but if you can try to convince me I might switch to Linux (or try to install it as a second OS (I have failed before doing it this way) or another computer, etc.)

GNU/Linux Debian, because is easy to maintain, very stable, powerfull and ethically clean.

Fedora 2 for me. Debian and Mandrake are also very neat distributions. Linux is both free and open soruce - ok, not *really* free because the boxed sets cost some money - and you could, strictly speaking, download it from the net, but you'd still be spending on the internet bill, and more importantly, your time. Linux support groups are extensive and are all over the place. It's reassuring to know that whenever you want help, someone's bound to do give it to you smile.gif I personally have a soft corner for anything released under the GPL; so I'll obviously prefer Linux. Off hand conversations may lead you to think that Linux won't stand the test of time, because most s/w is created for the Windows platform, especially game engines and such. However, I would ask you to consult reliable sources and judge for yourself. Some such sources are listed at the end of this message. Finally, you can always partition your disk, that's what I've done - 20 GB for Windows 98 and the rest for Linux. Remember, you can setup Linux so that all data from the drives allotted to Windows can be accessed while working on the Linux platform smile.gif

OK well i was exactly like you were. All i used to use was windows but then i started to do a good amount of programming (for the web and software) so i decided to try linux out. Now, i run both linux and windows on my computer and switch between them depending on what i want to do. Personally i use Suse Linux because i like its look and feel and it wasnt very hard to learn. I have used both Mandrake and Fedora before and i liked them but i liked suse better.

I think Linux is good for programmers or people who want a stable and virus-safe computer. But in my opinion, Windows XP is even better, I think it's because I use it since I've got my first computer.

Linux is not only for programmers. It's designed for everyone dependant on the distribution.

xboxrulz: right on! but why is your nickname xboxrulz? o.O

Back on topic: linux and it's children are usually only used in server envirnoments, but lately been aimed at the desktop. Knoppix is an example of such. If you want an easy to use distro, knoppix or DSL (D*mn small linux). If you want something stable I would go with Gentoo or Slackware.

Just my useless opinion smile.gif

well, I'm a guy who is in the gray area. I love the XBOX (and its games and Bungie) but I hate Microsoft and Windows.

Another stable Linux OS is SuSE wink.gif

Mmhh I think windows XP is crap compared to most linux destributions, but some destibutions arent as good as windows XP... But I think most people that claim windows is better havent used linux, or used a crappy free destribution found on some bonus CD from a computer magazine smile.gif

wow, about 2 months not being here and this post has expanded to two pages, anyways, let's start the bunson burner and let's roll:

[I] R Crazy Idiot: Ah, an ignorant Windows user who thinks that someone will make a virus once it comes popular. In Linux, if you have ever paid attention to it, it has a sophisticated permission system which will restrict maliculous software from ever altering system files and it will not delete any files that it DOES NOT HAVE PERMISSION to. Also, if you have SELinux installed, all services and software are locked in into a chroot jail and if a code tries to brake through, it will be automatically terminated. Also, depending how you configured Linux, it can crash easily. Yet, if you leave it to default settings from the distributor, it will have less chance of being crashed. All operating system crashes, but Linux crashes less than Windows because Linux handles the memory better. Crashing also depends on your hardware. Windows and Linux will crash if you have a crappy machine.
Dragonfly: The point of Linux is NOT to be a replacement for Windows, it is AN ALTERNATIVE for Windows.

That's all I have say for now.

Lately ive been beginning to hate windows a lot. And its not because of internet cause I have a computer that has a partition where I make music and videos and I dont let it go online and it still crashes and has given me a couple of blue screens. Its windows xp service pack 2. I would migrate to linux but it doesnt have any multimedia programs that I use. I guess that I will have to save up and buy a macintosh
