I want an AMD processor , the question is : which model should I use?
Which is the best processor , but still is not too expensive?

The AMD Athlon XP 3200+ 400FSB (2200Mhz, can be overclocked to 3200Mhz) is only about £80

That is what I have, I overclocked it to 2600Mhz
A GOOD BUY...

Anyone know how the laptop processor types compare. I am looking to buy one a laptop for a relative, it will be transported by car and actually used indoors, so it need not be very portable, but has to be able to keep up with running a lot of programs at once. Similarly battery life is not really an issue as it will almost always be plugged into the wall. It has to be a lptop only because moving a full desktop between buildings takes too long. Any ideas?

I have no idea actually huh.gif .
I don't know where you live , but if you live around holland/belgium , I would wait for an Aldi offer.
The best is just to go to your local computer store , and ask for some advise there wink.gif

What would you guys advise me besides an AMD Athlon processor?
Would an Intel Celaron be any good?
It's mostly for gaming , so i guess AMD is the best...
Any ideas?

Hi

As you've mentioned it's for gaming then forget the Celeron, the 3 best CPU's for gaming are
- athlon 64
- athlon xp
- pentium 4

you can cross pentium 4 off the list as you mention you don't want anything too expensive.

oh, and what is your budget? (how much money do you have to spend on it?). if it's a really tight budget then an athlon xp 3200+ (as suggested) would be great.

the xp3200+ would cost around £90 ? i dont know what that will be in your currency (if you don't use £££'s).

however, if you want your pc to last longer for an extra £30 you could get an athlon 64 3200+ (just make sure your motherboard can take one). that would last you longer for gaming.

hope this helps wink.gif

btw, im new here, so id like to say hi.... hi! smile.gif

Thanks for the reply mrkill47 smile.gif.

My budget lays between 100 and 200 euro.

Hmmm , 90 pound would be around 140 euro , thats affordable biggrin.gif.

The 64 3200 + costs 214 euro in my local PC shop , and thats a bit over my budget :S.
I might be able to buy it , and then use the motherboards default video card...

Thanks for the help , I'll think about it smile.gif.

PS Hi , welcome laugh.gif

What you get for your money with AMD beats Intel hands down. Intel simply seems to have gotten a reputation as the leaders in processor manufacture. I use an AMD athlon XP and have never had any problems with the heat whatsoever.

The AMD athlon XP 3000 has a clock speed of around 2.1 GHz. Using a decent mobo (I'd recomend MSI for overclocking) you can easily achieve 2.5 GHz or perhaps more in clock speed without cooling problems. The more expensive P4 3.0GHz CPUs are easily beaten performance wise by the AMD. Clock speed isn't everything!!

Intel simply seems to a trusted household name, I suspect more experienced computer users who are more researched lean towards AMD.

Ok, I've now desided what processor I'm gonna use, thanks guys!

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Socket 939 FSB800 2,40 GHz 512KB cache.
Its 310 euros, but its worth it!

Thanks again everyone!

Not sure weather or not its in your range, but the AMD Athlon 64 2800+. Although, its not at all the verry best, its what I use in my my computer, and it gets the job done. Although, it is kind of outdated, but hey, its all good. biggrin.gif

Wah, that is sucks!

I might not buy that motherboard though, there is a special advertised motherboard in my local PC store now, and that looks pretty good aswell.

What motherboard would you suggest for that processor?

ok, I know that I have quite a number of real crazy overclockings before. like clocking a 2.4GHz

Everything was still normalk even after the crazy overclocking....Can you believe that. I do
respect the Intel Northbridge chipsets as they really allow you to do some very kool clocking to
