Vanilla is good option. Learning Curve is fast. If you want you can try phbb3,if you want more control. Vbulletin if you want more customization etc. I think there is an article for comparison of such forum software on Devlounge website, don;t remember the title of that pos. Will post that here if it still exists.... read more.

Well Joomla and vbulletin are totally different. Joomla is an open source content management system, while vbulletin is an internet forum software. Joomla though is free, and vbulletin you need to buy a license for. You actually could use both, as Joomla could be used for your homepage, while vbulletin could be your community. Though, I am not sure how willing you are to pay a $160 license.

if you do use both be sure to research their compatibility together. you don't want your users to have to make two accounts just to use your website completely

Like bk2070 said, you might want to consider a combination of a website and forum. A lot of top sites now recognize that forums with more features are becoming popular. More and more sites are beginning to use forums as just one of many features, even if that is the main feature; and integrate in other features like blogs, games, polls, picture galleries, chat rooms, etc. More and more sites are popping up whose primary purpose is to provide site features for website users that can be easily placed on a website or forum.

Mk Portal offers a Portal complete with many features AND an AEF Forum built in.

Check it out...

i think that you would do good with mkportal, as it can be combined with almost any forum software out there, i know it supports atleast 4 different forums, and if you decided to go with joomla there is an add on forum script that you can get right off of there site.

I'm not sure exactly what you are looking for, but spruz.com might be the place you can find it.

There freewebbing is very generous and their paid hosting is exaclty what you paid for.

You may want to look up Invision Power Board and Subdreamer. The two software go together perfectly. Subdreamer can go with almost any other popular forum software as well, infact I think that's what it is designed for originally.

Although this topic is not about a community combined with a content management system. For a community, you dont want to use joomla. VBulletin is forum software which allows your users to interact with each other. It's possible with Joomla but VBulletin is much more efficient. Invision Power Board is also popular community software. Some people prefer IPB, some prefer VB.

If you want to earn money with it, I think choosing software shouldn't be your top priority. You have to create an active and attractive site.

That's the second time you have summed up my post well not all of it but yes.

Agree 110% with you, the point of Control Management Systems today is to use for your frontpage, Then you have a forum as your portal where member can chat about stuff. As for forums I would say vBulletin is the best but the cost is just a bit much for people that's why it's also good to go for the free alternative like SMF or phpbb3. This way you don't have to pay and they are both great software. There is also plenty of bridging plugins to bridge both the cms and forum but they don't always work as I have experienced.

Haha sorry. Great minds think alike I guess. The only thing I disagree with is using phpbb. I think phpbb lacks in admin capabilities so unless it is your first forum I would fork out some cash for vBulletin or IPB or just go with smf which is really good for being free.

Hello ridwans. Like said before you can't compare Joomla and Vbulletin because they are made to do different things. It's like comparing a bike with a with a horn. They do totally different things but they can be combined to make a better thing.
Joomla is a open source content management system which would be great for a home page. Joomla can be used as a very good portal to your forum. Joomla itself doesn't have a forum (maybe it does but its not a very good one) but thats when Vbulletin comes in.
I have never owned or even joined a forum using Vbulletin so I don't know how good it is but I hear it's one of the best if not the best. So I would use both together. If you don't want to pay the big price tag that Vbulletin has I recomend smf which can be downloaded for free at simplemachines.org.
Just make sure if you combined a cms (content management system) and a forum to use a bridge that way your users only have to log in once to use your entire website. If you have any questions about how to combined the two just ask.

You can't put them in the same category, they are completely different. In fact I use both of them in my site and will in my new site.

If they were the same it'd be like having two forums on my site. It depends on what kind of site your making you can have a forum or an actual website like the trap17 front page. I use joomla as my front page with just some news and stuff and then my forum is vBulletin where everything is happening.
