Well, my question is... I know that there is a standard size for a big banner (468 x 60, I think). But, are there other standards for smaller ones? I see them a lot of sizes, like for example 234 x 60 or 120 x 60 and I donīt know if there are some rules, etc. or itīs just a question of personal taste. So if thereīs a reference list or something like that, please post it here. Thanks

The Interactive Advertising Bureau published a list of acceptable banner sizes here, although I don't think this is set in stone, and is simply a guide to 'normal' sizes. Things like signatures, userbars and other images have no set standards, although certain sites and people often prefer certain sizes.

Actually I don't think there are any standards for banner sizes. They simply just have to fit your fittings nicely and have to me carefully measured before designing and printing. For example, a banner that supposed to be placed on the large wall of a shopping mall would be first measured for the certain dimension of the wall before constructing the banner. Because wall sizes and dimensions varies in different buildings hence there isn't any real standard sizes to follow. However there are still sizes that are recommended and suggested by many.

Likewise if you are talking about banners that supposed to be placed somewhere on your webpage. That will also have to suit and follow your page design and fittings. Everyone's webpage design are of different sizes hence there isn't any standard size for banners as well. Again, banner sizes for webpages are also recommended and suggested by some for its contribution in page loading speed.

Thanks, I mean website banners, yes. My question came when I realized that in the links sections of websites, each one seems to use a different size. So, if you want to put your banner or minibanner here, and there and there, you must fit it to different sizes. I thought it would be easier if there were some standards, so I thought maybe there were already.

I would think it is more a matter of where you need the banners displayed.

If it is going to be only on your site (i.e., a website over whose design and layout you have complete control), then I suppose you could make them any dimensions as long as they integrate well with your design and layout.

On the other hand, if you're going to ask others to use your banner to advertise your stuff, then you either make banners that conform to the standards (indicated by rvalkass earlier), or custom-make your banners according to the needs of the particular website that you have partnered with.

Sticking to generally accepted dimensions seems to be the way to play safe

As rvalkass right said and also gave a convincing link, YES there is a standard sizes for banners. If you are a google adsense users you can see all those standard banners which is mostly followed by many. Since there is this standard banner many sites have to adjust themselves to these banners.

Also, if you are a subscriber to Ebay you would probably know that they have standard sizes for banners but if you want to have your CUSTOM banner you could request them. That's how it is - meaning Standard and Custom are different.

Many big websites however make their own banners to suit them. Those banners come under Custom banners.
