Security Guidelines for Internet Users 1. Install an anti-virus software, you can free ones like AVG Free. Ensure that it's regularly updated - this is of the utmost importance. 2. Anti-virus software is not enough, the security can be tightened using a firewall software which will help you prevent unauthorized incoming and outgoing communications from your computer while connected to the Internet. 3. Disconnect your computer from the Internet when not in use. The longer you are connected to the Internet, the more opportunity you give for persons to gain unauthorized access. 4. If your computer is used by others, keep an eye on what they install and modify in the system. It's safest to make a policy not to allow any software to be installed without your permission. You can the other user access the computer using a limited account. 5. Ensure that you logout of sites properly. Failing to do so you allow others who use your computer to gain access to those services and you can be blamed for their activities. 6. Always use an alphanumeric password with not less than 8 characters. Never use anything that is related to you like your name, place bate of birth as your password. 7. Be very careful in chat rooms as these are places where Script Kiddies and other undesirable elements of the online community are very active. 8. Never visit any Warez sites as they usually contain infected files and pages. 9. Do not visit sites that you do not know what they are, they could be link crashers, IP spoofers, or VBScript worms. 10. Never install any software that you get from unreliable sources. 11. Always scan the CDs, DVDs and other removable media that you get from other with the Antivirus before exploring the contents. 12. Keep away from softwares that contain or reported to be spywares. 13. If you notice anything suspicious in your computer, check online for the symptoms or get in touch with an expert to identify the issue. 14. Always use the latest browsers, and other clients and also keep them updated with latest patches to keep your system from any possible attacks.

This is very useful advice that all internet users (or for that matter, computer users) should heed. If I were a mod I'd pin this, but ifs don't count. You have mentioned all the important stuff, however. Keep up the good work!

Funny enough after using my password for 12 years I finally changed it and what is scary it was very common word and I never had any problems with it. However, I would like to comment on two of those numbers 12 and 14; with number 13 that is easier said then done because sometimes you can't even tell especially computer users that user it for a checking email and talking to friends. You would have to have great in depth knowledge of a computer in order to spot anything suspicious; which is still true to this day as hackers and crackers and phreakers and phrackers are getting smarter as they hone their skills in the computer under ground. #14 is argumentative or at least the first part is but the reason is simple when a new browser comes out in beta form and not a stable release, of course not all programs are 100% bug proof so the latest and greatest is not the best choice as many of have learn with internet software.

yes, in my opinion every body in the internet needs a fire wall and anty virus most internet users usually does not discoonect their dsl or boadband internet connection, when their pc is idle. and this condition is harmful for them. if you loging to to warez or crack or porno sites you have to have a firewall and anti spy and antivirus program. and never run .exe file with size under 500kbs

Well I have to same I am bit surprise on this security flaw especially what it can do; in which all
a user has to do is open a malicious Excel document and it allows the hackers to execute remote code

from Excel 2000 to Excel 2003 SP2, and it also includes the Mac Version of Excel 2004 as well. OF
course with the disappointment of Office 2007 by some people will still be running the 2003 versions

hackers using rootkits to get into people's computers. Google defines a rootkit as a set of
programs used to hack into a system and gain administrative-level access. Once a program has gained

hacker's use; alter log files; attack other machines on the network; and alter existing system
tools to circumvent detection. Rootkits are an extreme form of System Modificatio...

if the malware is running under your limited-rights user, it can only do as much as you can. For
instance, a limited rights user can't edit the HKLM hive of the Registry, so any malware running
under the same user won't be able to touch that area. It's extremely simple t...
