This question is based off a class discussion I am having but always looking to seek more feed from others, so here is the original version of that discussion, mind you I am talking about the book when concern with page reference so you might have to look up some of these terms if you don't know them. With that being said I need people with hardware experience to answer this, any posts that say take this processor or that one without going into detail will be considered off topic and will be reported.
A friend of mine ask me to help him pick out some parts, of course he understands my lack of knowledge there of so both of us have been combing neweggs trying to look around and see what we could find.
To start off with the dilemma he wanted to find out which was better Core2Quad against the Pentium XE 965
To start off I looked at the specs and compared the two, I looked at the Operating frequency first to make things easy for me.
c2q -2.4GHz XE- 3.20, 3.46 GHz and 3.73 GHz (Wins)
by comparing the two freqs, it would seem that the XE has the better speed of the two, however, I know better then that since going into our 4th week. So at this point in time XE has one point for better processing speed.
Next I looked at the L1 L2 and L3 cache and see what they both support
c2q- (winner) L1 Cache 64KB+64KB L2 Cache 2 x 4MB
XE - L2 Cache 2x1MB and 2x2MB L3 Cache NA
Now the books mentions on page 136 that more ram on the L1 L2 the better, now with that in mind nad I think I am looking at this correctly the C2Q has a total of 8.1 mb of RAM and the XE has 6MB but no L1 or L3 cache memory. So with that in mind C2Q has the better memory for running the processor while the XE lacks in it by 2MB.
Now I am looking at the FSB, using page 20 and 131 for my reference:
c2q - 1066MHz XE 800 MHz and 1066 MHz (winner by narrow margin)
Well this would be a close call since both FSB are in the current standards but if I were to decide I would have to go with the XE, because of the fact depending on how you use the computer you could still use 800 MHz without no problem and if you into the high end of things then you can bump it up to 1066 MHz. While the C2Q is at the standard I think it's a bit to much for a general user.

To me it would close call, both have there pro's and con's, so would it be fair to say that the C2Q would be the better of the choice due to how it can handle raw power at a much slower speed? Or would giving up memory for speed be the better choice? I haven't factor in the price yet because the most money never really gives you the best product.
Mind you he has not decided yet, still a bit shocked he has ask me although he's a hardware guy himself (maybe a bit above my knowledge)

In reality, the Core 2 Quad Extreme will extremely own the crap out of the P4. In fact, this is nowhere near a close match. What you're not looking at is the most important part: the actual architecture of both devices. As AMD first proved, clock speed doesn't mean anything, maybe it might in theoretical benchmarks, but real world performance has shown otherwise. The Intel Core series are basically AMD type cpus Intel had to make because it got its *bottom* kicked by them. There was basically no competition between AMD and Intel because Intellian cpus came nowhere close to what AMD's could do in games, until the Core series came to desktops. What was the cause of this ownage? AMD obviously provided more power per clock cycle, mainly due to superb floating-point calculations vital for games and many other programs, and its onboard integrated memory controller that gave insanely low latencies for its ram. Also, just to throw this out, Intel seems to require faster ram much more than AMD's do, and in my opinion, this is because of the integrated memory controller AMD has.
So there you have it, seemingly similar cpus are actually very different. Always be sure to check out techreport.com if you need any more help of which components are better, they're my favorite benchmarking site.
That was my conclusion after doing some more product reviews and the fact the extreme version is just a bit better then it's predecessor the regular Core 2 Dual and I do believe the XE is a bit older then the Core2Extreme, well he should be pleased to know about it I guess .
I was reading a personal web site a couple of months ago that was discussing the owner's
experimentation with a 3.7 Ghz processor and liquid nitrogen cooling. If I recall correctly a speed
in the area of 5 Ghz was reached, but I don't recall exactly. Have any of you seen this site

which processor is the best for gaming, the compared processors are Intel Pentium IV HT E and AMD
Athlon 64 (if I am not mistaken...) Most people say that Intel is better than AMD but also more

I have a coputer about a year and half old, anyway last night I had to reset the BIOS due to some
unplesnentness, which I'm not willing to discuss. Anyway that went well however now the
computer thinks the process is AMD athalon XP 2500+ when it actualy is a 3200+, I know this for a

I have been looking at notebook computers, and have noticed that appears to be the latest in power
boosting, the dual core. Now I was wondering a few things about a dual core. Firstly, If the
description says 1.67 gHz dual core, is that the equivalent of having two 1.67 ghz processors, or
two 800ish mHz processors? Secondly, If I had the choice of getting a note book with a 2.2 gHz
processor, or a 2 gHz dual core processor, all other specs are the same, which would be the better
deal? And lastly, for now, I understand that WinXP Pro is required when you have two process...

I'm testing it with Need For Speed Underground 2 and am very happy of the performance the wheel
