I remember this program, a few years back. It was supposed to help prevent the downloading of fake files. Sometimes it would block things when surfing the web. It's an OK program, not as necessary today, but can still be useful.

it's conceptually a firewall. a basic firewall that blocks unwanted access and pinging to your computer. It is necessary today. it does a better job of keeping ads and whatnot away than most personal firewalls today, but it is in no way a stand alone firewall.

Yeap it can be treated as a firewall but may be better use for P2P software only. Definately you won't want to use it as a main firewall for your computer. There isn't any online updates either. Moreover, you cannot trust that it blocks everything like a firewall does.

Nice script though. Would like to check it out later.

Peerguardian is, as other poeple have pointed out so far, basically a firewall. But it is fundamentaly different in its design from an "attack protection" firewall.

What it does, as the name indicates, it blocks peers by eleminating certain ranges (or individual adresses of one needs to single some out) of IP addresses known to be occupied by "the bad guys" (aka RIAA, government, spy/addware companies, etc.). The IP-range lists used by Peerguardian are extensive and kept quite up-to-date. They can be configured to suit everybodies needs, from extremely paranoid to almost non-existant. It also offers the option, as mentioned before, to exclude the HTTP protocol which can be very handy because of the exentsive lists.

Peerguardian is definetly not a stand alone firewall, but I wouldn't do without it anymore as no other firewall offers similar options of completely shutting of certain IP adresses or ranges. Of course the lists don't guarantee complete protection and they are not able to shut out all the bad guys, but it is an additional layer of security at a minimal cost since it is free and barely uses any ressources. If you use any P2P software, Peerguardian is a must and if you don't it's still a nice security bonus to have.

there is also a program called protowall. it's pretty much the same thing. It's an alternative though. I think peerguardian works for linux users too, which is an advantage. (LInux already has iptables and such though).

Yes, Peer Guardian is a useful thing to have running in the background, especially now it doesn't chew up system resources like it used to. However, if you block HTTP, initially it has Trap17 blocked as well - something to do with it being on the "CoreExpress" server. tongue.gif So, remember to unblock it if you have it enabled wink.gif

Yup, that just shows how good Peerguardian is, the lists they use are way to exclusive for just surfing the web, that's why I usually allow HTTP.
