First there was StarOffice a office suit that worked on allmost all Os-es but after a while they wanted to let people pay for its suit so a few people desided to make a fork of it and called it OpenOffice which also runs on allmost all OS-es (from the start).

At my school there are linux computers with OpenOffice and it seems pretty good. Just the different layout differences. But how do I get a copy of this? Is there a site I go to, or do I have to send one for mail?

OpenOffice is a really a good alternative for Microsoft Office. As it is Open Source we get a lot of support and resources for this app.

I personally use open office (because word is a pos imo) and its quite satisfactory as an office suite.

though it has some problems: namely limited compatibilty (from my experiance) with powerpoint. and well the other problems are just mannerisms left over from word that no longer apply. >.<

OpenOffice came with my computer, and I like it. I find it better than Office, in my opinion. It takes forever for me to download (since I have dial-up), so my current version is out of date. However, I do have Portable OpenOffice. My opinion on it though is based only on limited use (I don't really have to use it very much).

Our school's computers use OpenOffice since all the machines are running on linux now except for those in the computer laboratories. It's okay. It pretty much delivers what MSOffice provides but its free and cross-platform (Linux and Windows) compatible. The features are so comparable to MSOffice even the shortcut keys are the same. What's good about it is that it can still read, modify and save docs to MSOFfice documents, a feature not possible for Office (word doc should be saved as *.doc). smile.gif

In fact, i'm using openoffice 2.0 now.

I Used ms office for a long time, sometimes i still use some programs of the ms office 2003, but now i use more the openoffice programs.

The openoffice 2.0 is absolutly great, perhaps even better then ms office, at least in many things, for example:

- You can save word docs to pdf on spot, there's even a button named save as pdf;

- You can make better presentations;

- And so on.

well, joshua I think someone fooled you.
Openoffice.org is basically an open source software and it was carried from Sun Microsystem's Star Office. Both openoffice.org & star office are similar.
It was not made or started by one person..It is a combined effort of hundreds of programmers

I first heard about OpenOffice from an awesome computer instructor of mine by the last name of Skaggs. He also told us about http://www.NoNags.com which is an awesome freeware site. He also mentioned that OpenOffice was made by a guy who hated Bill Gates and hoped that OpenOffice would take away business from Microsoft. Does anyone know any more on that?

Abiword came with my linux distro(damnsmalllinux), but I decided to download OOo, and was really impressed... It had a lot of great features and was a good alternative... I haven't spent as much time with it yet, so I'm not exactly sure how everything works, but it looks really good so far.
