QUOTE(YungOdo @ Jan 4 2008, 11:29 PM) Okay i recently bought a godaddy hosting account. Now my question is whats the difference between the Linux OS hosting, and the Windows OS hosting? Kind of self explanatory. On the 1st one the server runs on a Linux OS and a webserver like apache while on the other one will run on windows-based technology like Advanced server 2003 or something like that.

Yeah, the software used for the server and the actualy OS are different. Also, different features could be present on each. Linux is a more secure OS for servers and probably includes PHP hosting. Windows is a little less secure, but ASP hosting could be offered. I would look at the packages for each OS.

Aside from the obvious (Linux hosting runs a Linux-based OS (often Debian), while a Windows host usually runs a Windows Server version), there are differences in the features you get too. Both should offer PHP, MySQL and all that stuff, and you will usually find they both run Apache as their web server. However, if you want to use ASP, you will need to go for Windows hosting. There are Linux 'ports' of it that claim to work, but as far as I know they are not really that good at the moment. The advantage of a Linux server is that you get better security and reliability compared to a Windows server. You will also find a lot more of the advanced features on Linux hosting, that aren't available on Windows hosting.

Windows hosting means that your hosting server is run on Windows platform like windows 2003, xp etc if it is Linux hosting then it runs on any of the linux platforms. the web hosting provided my trap17 is linux hosting. linux hosting has many advantages over windows hosting. technologies like jsp wont work in windows platform. but, almost most of the technologies or languages supported by windows is also supported by linux hosting servers. moreover, linux is much more safer and down time is less. people go in for windows platform because of ease of maintaining and configuring the servers. it gives a more user frindly environment. but windows hosting very costly compared to linux hosting. i would personally recomend you linux hosting. good luck!

I would get Linux hosting myself, since it's reliable and things like MySQL are offered, and also because I don't really need ASP.

Hi, The difference really between Linux and Windows is.... 1. Linux you are not giving the man a ridiculouse power over not only home computers but corporate computers as well 2. Linux is made by the people for the people so as such will tend to be on the bleeding edge a little more.. 3. Linux is much more secure than windows... 4. I just dont like windows 5. Come on now have you seen the videos on youtube of the microsoft VP Lol to be honest guys microsofts wings should be clipped.... and if in doubt the french have the right idea as there goverment has just switched all major computer systems to a form of SUSE Linux

Eh, I think you should choose a Linux based server because they are more reliable, secure and offer more features than a Windows hosting - and for some reason, even though it's better than the Windows one, it's a lot cheaper in most cases. You should go with Windows hosting if you have ASP.net coding skills or want a more user-friendly enviroment, but I don't recommend you do so... Oh, and if you aren't sure about with which hoster you should start, (except Trap17 ) you should definitively try Dreamhost - because their offer is amazing! I don't have the money to buy hosting ('cause I'm too young) but when I turn 18 I would definitively buy a hosting from those guys

correction miladinoski .. I dont think you are totally correct .. i mean there are ways for ASP.net to work on Linux.. I think so .. And Linux is more stable than Windows.. thats why its generally there on 90 % of the servers. Also the hardware requirement in case of Linux pc is less than that in Windows based PCs. Since server is only a piece of software that runs on the OS.. The stability of the OS decides the stability of the OS

Linux on a Mac (0) Why are there no good distributions of Linux for Macs? I have a MacBook with Mac OSX Tiger, Windows
XP, Windows Vista, and OpenSuSE 11.0 on it. I wrote a post here on how to accomplish this.
However, OpenSuSE works horribly on Mac. Is it completely Mac's proprietary fault, or is it
just that most Linux users in their right minds would never pay for a Mac when they could build a
Linux-friendly machine for pennies in comparison? I use a Mac for many reasons. First of all, I
love it. Secondly, I have a website that I like to check with a variety of environments. ....

How Many Times Do You Reinstall Windows In A Year

They have to switch a lot of softwares, compilers etc etc. Windows as we know, will not tolerate a
whole lot of (Un)installations and will ultimately slow down the whole system. This is not the case
with Linux. Just consider this, I installed Red Hat WS 3(the older version whi....
