| | I'm using a laptop so obviously I'm not leaving it on 24/7... However, I have lots of friends who left their pc on 24/7, and they left their messenger on as well, but their computer are still in working condition.. And some of them left it there to download things that are as huge as a few GB and thus with moderate connection its wise to leave it there throughout the night... And I always would recommend others that bought a desktop to leave their pc on for the first day they bought it, and that if it survive the first day then it should have no problem with the remaining.. |

I got servers running here, basicly we have highest electric costs there are in the netherlands. I pay about 40 euro per month on the electric bill. Normal home pc is 15/20 euro asuming 350 watt. I leave my servers on 24/7 and sometimes the free hosts pcs for my mmorpgs or 20 hours a day. Is it bad? YES it will make your pc shorter? YES why? basic fact of powercabels and microships they basicly give up after a whyle. Also most home pc users never use correct cooling in there systems and yust go buy a random pc in some shop. Thats a killer bad cooler will make your lifespan of your pc verry short. Also most videocards coolers are those weak plastic thingys there utherly useless. I replace them with my own coolers i dislike them and after a whyle they make noises wish is terible anoying.

Depends on the type of person you are. 80% of the time I turn it off at night but it's on 90% of the day. I know people who leave their's on all the time, even their laptops. I've got a laptop that's practically a desktop computer, it's massive ($3000 gaming laptop lol). So I don't have too much trouble but it needs to be shut off at least once every 3 days and it's fans need cleaning at least once every 3-6 months at the least to keep it running top-notch. If you go into IRC a lot you'll see a lot of people have it on 24/7. You'll see a guy with a name "John". Then it'll go to "John|SHOWER". Then "John". Then "John|EATING". Then "John|SLEEPING". Then once again "John". If you don't go into IRC and don't believe me, try a few IRC channels yourself, I swear it's true  .

I keep my desktop on all the time because my desktop acts as a server, but I never keep my laptop on 24/7 because after a while the charger will get hot.

well personally I never used to think that leaving the computer turned on for more than 48 hours at a stretch was such a good idea. However, now I have started thinking differently with the comp being on for about a week or so but rarely more than that.

wow, I leave my computer on ALL the time. I think my computer has been on for a few months now, the only time I "turn off" the computer is when I restart it and that's not really turning it off... each time I get off my computer, I just turn off the monitor. My brother did this before nothing really bad happened to it .. but I just learned/read recently that viruses can come in more easily than having it off.. but my pc isn't slowly dieing, it's acting normal and alot faster than some of my friends computers actually.

Our school computers have been on since 2 years , first since we got them , I don't see any side affects, we even leave them on during 2 month breaks, I asked the computer lab teacher and she said, that if we don't leave them on, their hardrives will get spoilt. I think purchasing new ones will be hardly a percentage of our electricity bills

If you have windows XP you can leave your computer on for almost an eternity it seems. Depends alot on your processor speed, ram, and how've you tweaked it. It will definantly kill your pockets though when you get your electric bill. You also shouldn't run defragmenter every day or anything... Only when you need to do it, its not healthy. Kind of like getting a cast put on a limb thats not broken, know what im sayin? Or was that a horrible analogy hehe.

I find that not shutting the computer off or restarting it causes CPU intensive programs to run slower. A benchmark ran before and after a period of extended operation showed that the computer was not acting as well as it did before. I turn the computer off each time I use it, or log off to ensure that all programs are exited out.

Yeah. It's a topic my mom and I are discussing(actually we're arguing about it) But however I've never left my pc turned on for longer than a day. I sometimes turn it on for 23 and a half hrs and give it a 30 min rest. ;D

Decent Computer

Can't Start Up My Computer
(6) I can't start up my computer. When I switch it on, it just goes to a blank screen, or sometimes,
it will go to the Blue Screen of Death, and the message on it changes every time, so I don't
even know how to solve it. I've gotten the Page Fault In Non Paged Area error a couple of times.
I tried to boot my computer from my Windows XP Service Pack 1 CD, but after running it and repairing
Windows XP, the problem isn't solved. I've also tried to start my computer from safe mode
but it still shows the BSOD. I don't even know how it happened. I didn'....
Windows Explorer Crashes Consistantly [resolved]
closes itself down after leaving on for a few minutes (7) This is a constant problem whenever I try sorting my files, suddenly Windows Explorer shuts itself
down by calling in Dr. Watson. Then restarts and repeats again after awhile. It doesn't happen

Computer restarting while playing games (7) I have read in a lot of forums about the importance of this component. And with regards to my

Is it better? (7) What do you think of the widescreen display laptops are beginning to adopt nowadays? Is that the

Strange Thing Happened To My Computer

PC Randomly Crashes And Hangs, Ideas? (16) I recently got a new computer, a NEC i-Select D5410. A few days ago it started to randomly crash,
