I'm in the midst of making a new translation of Vergil's The Aeneid. Flipping through pages and pages of my Latin dictionary-tome became far too tedious after awhile, so I had to find some other means of researching Vergil's rather peculiar Latin. I had been using the online dictionary at http://humanum.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/Lexis/Latin, but it's missing a lot of content and takes too long for my wimpy internet connection to send and receive information from their server.

I stumbled upon a programme called WORDS, which is a downloadable Latin dictionary. What I think is the nicest feature on it is its ability to look-up words even when the words are not in what would be "standard dictionary form." I can toss some silly poetic conjugation of a verb into it, and it still finds an entry. There are lots of various arguments you can use as well, to restrict the search. Results include not only the definition of the word, but also, if you entered a noun for example, the various cases in which it may be declined and fit the search parameters. It's very handy, and has made translation a whole lot easier, considering I can spend more time crafting translations rather than spend five minutes reciting the alphabet to myself to figure out whether I need to flip forwards or backwards in my dictionary.

There's also an online version of the same dictionary, found at http://lysy2.archives.nd.edu/cgi-bin/words.exe, though for myself, I've downloaded the application, so I don't have to worry about the time it takes to process.

Thank you very much, this is going to be very usefull to me.

Sometimes i want to translate latin words to english, and everytime i need to open the browser, open a search engine, open another if that one does not show the proper results, and so on, i hate doing that, this program is making my life easier.

I have a trick to find specific latin words or anyother word that you do not understand its meaning, just visit google.com and insert this keywords:

define:keywords

for example:

define:carpe diem
url: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=d...G=Google+Search

define:lol
url: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=...amp;btnG=Search


As you can see, this way is also very easy, but now i prefer the program you shared in this topic of yours, thanks again.

Good to see that despite Latin's disappearance from mainstream education, there's still a desire for its ancient certainties and beauties. All my suffering during my long gone school years were worth while, as I still gain pleasure in tracing back words to their Latin roots.

Good to see this topic was and it is not another one useless, specially when this subject is very important concerning our past, the roman language, the well known roman empire and their influence to the rest untill today.

just making my spring cleaning on my PC - and with accounts at forums it is like with dresses: either use it or trash it. Took the second choice and jumped by again. The two of us have to admit, that we didn't manage to bring new life to this post. Well, we will survive and Latin anyhow is alive.

BTW - Babylon also has a translation software. The Babylon Dictionary. Lovely tool, with a free 2 weeks trial version for some 50+ languages.... Yes including - do you hear me, people out there - LATIN!
