good, you've found it googlue! biggrin.gif have you tried it yet? how long does it take

I don't think I'll be a user of this new program by Google. I like the Google toolbar and using it now but I don't know about this one. I don't think there's anything majorly that I can't find on my pc with the search thingy built into XP. Although the chat logging thing is cool. I thought this was gonna be one of those Google invitation things. Lol.......Well what else can they come up with next......?

Well, I have started using it and am very comfortable...

lib2day, it took probably overnight to index my 60 GB harddisk with about 40 GB of data..., not really sure, left the PC on...
But the search is instantaneous!
and i am enjoying it anyways, now!

Since I have WinXP, no probs here...

great! smile.gif i just have around 10GB of data so my indexing would be 1/4 of your time tongue.gif

btw, googlue, can it index external data...? let's say i have 50 CDs of data as well.
transferring them to a harddrive would consume a ton of disk space, and i just want
them to stay in CDs.

Not sure about that, lib2day...
That's a good idea, tho'

You index all your CDs and then Google will tell you which CD to insert to find what you want!! Why don't you suggest it to Google? They may make you their affiliate! LOL!

Seriously, you can try that and see if it works... may be it's already there...

yeah but cant you use the search tool already in windows? why would you download something else that can just clutter up your system? im not trying to badmouth this but i just think it would be a better idea to just save space on your computer and use the search function already installed.

just my two cents

You have to use to see the difference.
Have you realized that searchig for file in your PC takes a longer time than searching for a file/ info on the Net? Paradox!
This settles the paradox...
Try and if you don't like uninstall...

once you get used to desktop searching, it almost changes how you change the computer. at least it has on mine.

however, instead of using google, try Copernic Desktop Search. much much faster and better than google desktop.

Google Desktop 4 has been released. It is featured on the Download.com front page at time of writing.

I think that Google Desktop Search is an excellent internal search tool for your computer. Have you tried the plug-ins? They are GREAT!

Anyways, I use the Google Desktop Search to show my RSS Feeds. Good idea?

I use (and love I might add) Google desktop search I tried Copernic but I didn't like it, you see I use Google Desktop to launch files not to search for files and I find it to be the best for this purpose. I also quite like the sidebar but I don't use it as much as I could. The actual searching for files I also find to be quick enough for me. I personally don't like the browser based interface but it is possible to just use the deskbar and the pop up menu type thing to quickly search for and launch those files. It is far from perfect however I would love it if the floating deskbar would hide behind other windows and there are a few small issues regarding the general useage, but I can highly recommend this product if you just want a quick way of launching commonly used files and programs from a few simply keywords. This might just be me but I wouldn't really care if they used the information to display small contextual ads as long as they were of the adwords variety and didn't take up too much room, but you know you can always just block it with a firewall if it bothers you that much.

Hi all,

I have been using Google Desktop Search since version two came out. It is really nice...integrating maps, google talk, gmail, google news, and a todo list all in a clean sidebar. The whole integration is awesome, but then I can search for files on my computer, that is really nice! smile.gif

I agree with cse-icons...I find google desktop more convenient and useful than a concern for privacy.

Go Google!!!

hi,
I have been using Google Desktop for quite some time now. Actually it has a huge index of over 1 GB on my PC and searching for files is extremely fast and efficient. Moreover u can set it to switch off indexing for certain folders (where u might have personal data) as well.

There have always been privacy concerns for everything from Email to online shopping to whatever.. but that does not stop people from using it.. At least I find it more convenient and useful than harmful.

Cheers.

Now that both MSN and google have made public their desktop search tool, although beta, let take a
look at them. Google is the first one to make the idea become true, hands down to google. It is
simple, fast, just as google web search. However, I don't like the idea that intergrating the
desktop search in the web browser. Also GDS takes too much memories, probably one of the reasons is
the intergration to browser. No pdf file searching. No customizing of folder. There are a lot of
room for google to improve. MSN's destop search is as fast, the indexing is the fa....
