There are many people in the world that use .tk has a redirect service for the subdomains that they may have. Sure it's free and may seem to be a good way for people to belove that you have a real domain name, but there are many factors that make do.tk not worth the risk to even think about using it. There are many reasons, and all will be listed below me! All will be listed on a number scale that will be from 1-4 1. when using dot.tk it will cloak the url name. That means if your Url was www.jack.trap17.com then it would look to be that your website was www.jack.tk evn though it is still www.jack.trap17.com. You may be thinking to yourself, " Hey thats a good thing, I want people to see that www.jack.tk is up there instead of the subdomain." where that's wrong in most cases because then if you have other pages they will still appear as www.jack.tk. For example, if you have a gamepage on your site ad the url for the game page were to be www.jack.trap17.com/gamepage, none of your users or websutferes would be able to visit that url on their own or through the the naviagtion bar on the top of your browser. That means the only way for your surfer to be able to go to the gamepage if if they were to go to your homepage and then click the link or links that will tak him/her to that available page. 2. Another bad think about .tk is that they want you to have ads ion your site that either tell the visiotr that the site is from dottk or that and an omes up and promotes the dot.tk website in many different ways. In some case both were to pop-up even when you clikc ob only one or the other to be disabled. Thatwill then continue me to my next point. You are able to disable the ads to your site. But by doing so not only are you loosing revenue for dot.tk but you also are setting yourslef vunerable for some much unfortunate mishaps. For example, i had a dot.tk site an I had pop-ups for many months. FInally i decided that I didn;t want them anymore andwas going to set the pop-ups to be disabled. afterwards the website had many glithes on my site and other unwanted pop-ups were in my site, but not the dot.tk pop-upd some toher peoples websites. Since my web programer and providers were all pop-up free, tyhe only possible reasing for this was that dot. tk had put those ads onto my website. 3. Their forwarding service is horrible. I used their web forwardsing system and seemed ike a cool thing to have yourname@yourname.tk, but it wasnt. Any of the sites or email addresses that you made availablefor forwarding took awhile for it to be recieved. For example, if you were signing up for a memebership for a website that offered instant verification through the email address and you put your yournam,e@yourname.tk email address that it will take 4 times longer to ave it recieved that what was first anticipated for it to be. So instead of only 1 min or less for it to be recieved it would take over 4minutes. 4. The last pint I have for you is that they scrw up on marketing. For example, Not many peopl go to my site abround ionly 50 hits aday/ and one da I look on ym marketing thing for dot.tk and it said that10000000 people visited my site in one day! I was first excited that thought that it was wrong. I thought the glitch was going to be fixed but want and stuckthinking if really that much peopel went to my site on that particular day even though only 4 people visited it the very next day. Thats it hope you learned something!

You bring up some very good points on this subject, however it seems to me that you don't have any REAL evidence that dot Tk put those other ads on your site. If you don't have evidence, then you can't just assume and use it as a point. The whole cloaking the url thing is a problem. When I refresh the page I don't like to be taken back to the homepage. It's annoying. If your site is done in frames, however, you would have the same problem and if you can put up with that, then I can't see why .TK would bother you. You wouldn't see your frame's url, would you? Also, I have another arguement. Dot Tk is a FREE service, therefor if you aren't paying them to do otherwise, they have a RIGHT to place a small ad saying that they host your domain. The same thing applies to free web hosts, including our own no-posting required trap17 hosting. If Dot TK is going to host domains for you for free, then they're going to need at least SOMETHING from you to help them out so that they can do so. Your title says "Free, but not worth it" and all I have to say to that is; You get what you pay for.

Yeah, dot.tk stinks, I accidently cancled my dot.tk domain name so when I went to use it again it said some else had it. The webpage is now something about free hosting??? That's okay, I bought a .info domain anyway so forget dot.tk! Anyway, I bought a .info domain for only 1 dollar so theres no need for dot.tk anymore.

It is said that you get what you pay for. As you are paying nothing, the .tk website have got to make some money somewhere in the loop. QUOTE 3. Their forwarding service is horrible. Why would you be complaining about 4 minutes . Anyway, forwarding e-mails is always going to take longer to reach you.

if something is free is it not always worth ? since you dont have pay anything to use the services i think you may still either use it or not use it according to what you want and still not call it not worth , but any way dot tk is not so cool a name to have , but i guess as it is a free service you do not have much choice to dictate anything

My free domain is co.nr. They have an easy setup process and once you register it's yours and you can direct it to wherever you want. I haven't had any problems with them so far and I've used them for about 6 months. I've heard a lot of .tk, but I went with co.nr because I heard something about .tk putting ads on your site (even though I wasn't sure about that) and I knew co.nr didn't have ads.

If Dot TK is going to host domains for you for free, then they're going to need at least SOMETHING from you to help them out so that they can do so. But there is a difference between the service of TRAP17 and DOT TK. DOT TK demands more than what it serves. If you use the free domain .co.nr from www.freedomain.co.nr, than you will realize that DOT TK is demanding more. For .co.nr you are require to show only a small banner or text and that too only on the first/index page of your site. The problem number one above mentioned by bk2070 is also eliminated by .co.nr. For example, if your sites url is www.xyz.trap17.com and from .co.nr you have got www.xyz.co.nr, and if you have a gamepage on your site ad the url for the game page were to be www.xyz.trap17.com/gamepage then this page is also accessible from www.xyz.co.nr/gamepage, that means .trap17.com is completely replaced by .co.nr. As far as comparison of length of .co.nr and .tk is concerned, I think .co.nr looks cool, so I recommend everyone to use .co.nr or pay some bucks for using .info the cheapest one.

I'm not really familiar with .co.nr, but if thats all the ads they require then I guess that would make them better than .TK for sure. Um, no, that wouldn't mean that Trap17 stinks "You get what you pay for" doesn't always have to imply that you forked over some MONEY. For the post-required hosting, your paying in posts, and for the non-posting required, you have an ad on your site, which I think is fair since you're not paying a cent (even in posts) If you don't want to pay for a domain, then the free one you get instead is DEFINITELY going to have it's downsides. Like ads. Or ugly endings. Or even an ugly favicon. But it's free and it's also exactly what you agreed to pay for, which is nothing since you didn't pay

.CO.NR is better than .TK, thats all. With .co.nr you can place the small banner in any part of your page, also, they offer better redirecting services like Clocked URL and i heard that they are offering mail service redirect or something. Dot TK places pop ups and ads on the top of your site, and on every page. Also i recomend a .NET.TC subdomain. They offer the same features than .Co.NR but they dont force you to put ads!! Personally thats my favorite URL redirecting service.

Yes dot.tk is not the best cloaking or url redirection around. Personally i would use freedomain.co.nr its a better website but you have to link to them on the front page of your website. If not your account gets banned.

.tk keywords
Free, But Not Worth It
Hey all, I have 2 websites on .Tk now and I'm pleased with their services. There are no popups anymore, only a banner at the top of your page. You can choose to place Tiki links in the banner, and .Tk promises to show these on similar tk web sites, which is very good and certainly draws more visitors to your site. However I have not seen my ad on any other tk site yet. The only complain I have is this: .Tk creates it's own keywords based on the content of your site. This feature is terrible, since the words may have nothing to do with your site at all. Also, there are sooo many keywords, web crawlers don't like this and therefor you get poor placing in web searches. And when I use a metatag analyzer for my .Tk site, the results are horrible. It couldn't find any useful information on the site. However, when I analyze the real web address of my site, I get good result on my meta tags. This means there is something wrong with .Tk meta tags generator. -reply by MovieMaster

While not all of your allegations against dot.tk (such as about the forced ads) may not hold true, .tk is pretty crummy. It offers no DNS control at all, and simply provides web forwarding. I can agree that the site design is quite unprofessional and the e-mail forwarding is ok at best. Personally, I like FreeDNS. You can choose from thousands of domains, shared by their domain owners. Some of the domain names are very short and look fairly like a real TLD (us.to, uk.to, info.tm, mooo.com, ig3.net) that you can attach to make your own example.us.to, example.uk.to, example.info.tm, etc. The registration is easy, doesn't ask you to provide much more than your name and your e-mail address. You can set DNS records (A, CNAME, MX, and more), and you can also choose to simply set it up as a web forward (like dot.tk). Because you can use DNS records, it means that you can often host it just like a real domain on many web hosting services.

I'm not sure where I stand on the dot TK issue. It's free, so why are we complaining? But at the same time, I'm wondering why they have to put so many ads, when other sites that offer more could put less. They should require you to put a text ad on the bottom of your page or something. That would work a lot better. When I see text ads of the bottom of good websites telling me "Powered by X", or "X provided by Y", I tend to click on it. But if I see something intrusive such as a giant popup or ads that disfigure the whole entire site, I think otherwise, and just close them out without giving them a second look.

The only good thing about dot.tk is the short url (www.website.tk) but it is NOT worth using it. The services are horrible, the ads, everything. They could be a great url forward service but they prefer to full the members with ads and stuff. Their markeing is more important than service quality and I do not like that, I think the website members should be in the first place and then theirselves. I'm pretty sure they could make a good service and a good money at the same time.
