it's a good distro, but the only problem is that there are network issues that took me forever to configure, that's why I went for SUSE and Yoper instead.

well i either thought about trying Fedora or Gentoo on a new machine, what do you guys think about Gentoo

osknockout
Gentoo's awesome man. Fastest distro on the net.
I (being a newbie programmer at the time) started with
the precompiled package, but it still goes very fast.
Hard to setup, but it's worth it.

Fedora's ok from what I've heard, haven't tried
it, but I think it's less popular than its predecessor
Red Hat 7 because of several issues.

OK thanks, I want to try Gentoo but im not to sure about the install i watched a friend do it and i was like (huh?), im not a newb to the linux world but i still think ill have to do some hard reading before I try my penguin hand at it.

Indeed. Like I said, Linux Questions or Linux Forum are good palces.

Linux Forum has an IRC channel if you can't wait for support, also.

Thanks for the rep point Nova

I'm right now docked with SuSE and might advance to Gentoo, but the handbook is SO confusing, it's like installing UNIX (the old one)!

I like Gentoo for it's customizability and I like SuSE for being the most easy "real" Linux distro and that it uses RPM, which is easy for me to install stuff.

I have gentoo for a some ime, and I don't want anything else. It is fast and stable, but if you are not sure about instaling it don't. It is hard to install. If you don't know what is fstab, or how to configure lilo or grub manualy dont try this. On the other side Debian and Slackware are fast, stable and easyest to install. Fedora? I dodn't try it but I don't like it and i still don't know why.

Here's a good question: Is Linux better at utilizing hardware efficiently to produce optimal
performance out of your components. I hear a lot about Mac OSX being so much better with Intel
processors and yada yada, but I don't know if this is true or if a bunch of Mac elitists said a
bunch of crap and ran with it. I don't think there are actual comparable benchmarks, but if
there are, where does Linux lie in the hardware efficiency race? (Or is it dependent on which Linux

  19. What Made You Switch To Linux?
    (39)
I first tried Linux a few years ago, not because I was completely against Windows or anything like
that, but just because I had some free time on my hands. I started off with Mandrake 9.0 which was
very user friendly and Windows-like. After reading through a bunch of message boards and learning
which distros are good for what, I soon realized my current distro was great for Linux noobs. So
then I decided to try something a little more advanced like Slackware which I knew had a steep
learning curve. Since then I've been using Slackware as my main OS and couldn't ....

About three years ago I decided to learn how to use Linux and after a lot of posts on a forum I
tried Ubuntu Linux as it was recommended as a good first Linux distro. Ubuntu is not the easiest
Linux distro to use but with its unmatched forum community support it is one of the easiest to learn
to use. One of the problems with learning Linux is that a lot of users have an attitude that Linux
should be a free Windows knock off which it is not. Ubuntu is build on a Linix core or kernel and is
a different Open Source and free as in to use operating system. This brings us to t....
