QUOTE(Styx @ May 27 2005, 05:59 AM) i'm needing to set up a DSL modem, to which the computers connect through a router. all the computers are running winXP. is it possible to configure only certain computers to be allowed to access the internet, with password prompt? how so, or where can i find a tutorial on this? You can limit other computers to have internet access but it is impossilbe to prompt them for password unless you have a domain controller and setup the computer policy but these will be more complicated. If you are using a router it should be connected to wan port, so all computer connected to it are capable in accessing the internet but still depend on the configuration of each computers, if you want remove internet connection to some other computer you should configure the IP and the GATEWAY, including the DNS setup. remove the gateway to the specific computer and it will not be able to connect to internet. I will do search for additional info for this and post it here as long as I found useful one...

um, yeah, the password thing i guess is kind of redundant. more applicable would be to have one main computer that can control the other's access. thanks for your help, and i look forward to more of your posts.

Your best bet there would be a linux router. The other computers will connect through that router to the net. However its not as easy as this, your modem needs to be able to relay DNS and gateway information, you'll need multiple network cards etc... If you only want to disable some computers then the easiest way is to block their MAC addresses which most modems and routers can do.

Router Is Acting Weird
After a power failure (8) Hello people, This week we've had a power failure arround the entire neighbourhood. Altrough
the power was restored after a few hours my computer has a big problem now, basicly, if I let it
inactive for too long (and sometimes randomly) the router disconnects my PC. When I try to reconnect
to the network after that I get an error message saying something like my PC cant get a network
adress assigned. After reconnecting / disconnecting the network cables and reinstalling the drivers
from my network card it usually starts working again, for a few while. Now I'm af....

Can't Configure My Router With Aol
(6) I bought a DLink-524 wireless router, because I am getting another computer and a laptop and I
wanted to share the network. I am running AOL with Broadband DSL which I have had for some time
with no problems. Here is the setups (Like I said I am new to routers) DSL modem > Router >
Computer (As the manual said). There is an ip to connect to to configure the router. I can get
there no problem, and configure it (pppoe). But it doesn't connect. It seems that the only way
I can connect to the internet is directly from the modem to my computer. Am I missing somet....
Slow Connection With Linksys Wrt54g Router
working fine until few months ago (8) Hey there everybody! I need some help. Here's the problem. I have a Linksys Wireless WRT54G
v5 router, which, I think, is acting up. First of all, I can't get port forwarding to work!
About three month ago my port forwarding was working flawlessly, I could use download clients like
DC++, or BitComet, or have an ftp server running, etc... Now, whichever ports I use, nothing seems
to work. Plus, in clients like DC++ where you're connected to several hubs, the connection to
the hubs is constantly dropped. On top of that, the joke's on me actually....
Wrt54g V5 Loses Connection
Linksys Router (2) I have a WRT54G v5 router and ADSL with PPPoE and I'm experiencing problems with the router
dropping the Default gateway periodically. After browsing this forum for similar problems and
hopefully solutions with no luck on the solution part I decided to chat with Linksys. The guy I
chatted with suggested that I should try changing the router's IP address to 192.168.2.1 instead
of 192.168.50.1 which I had set it to before. In my ears the tip sounded like rubbish, but I gave it
a try and it actually seems to be working. A sufficient amount of time hasn't passe....
2 Computers On Same Router, By Different Speed
(3) I have two computers on the same router. My Comcast advertise a max of 6 mbps. On testing one of my
computers I get 5.5 mbps. On my other computer I only get 4.6 mbps. I am using the on board NICs for
both computers. I got these numbers based on several runs on several days. One motherboard is Asus
P4T533-c with a built-in Intel pro-100 ve NIC. (5.5 mbps) The other motherboard is GA-8IHXP 3.0
with a built-in Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC. (4.6 mbps) Does anyone have any
idea why one computer is faster than the other? I used nyc.speakeasy.net to test ....
What Is Your Prefered Wireless Router?
(6) My Linksys BEFW11S4 had recently lost sensitivity to wireless connections and often had drop
packets. Pinging the router replies with "Request timed out". I'm thinking of getting a new
wireless router. I've not used other brands before but thought of changing brands as I'm
afraid another Linksys product might cause the same problem. However, as Linksys is part of Cisco, I
feel a certain sense of sercurity in Linksys products. I'm not sure which brands I should get.
This poll might give alot of help to me and also please leave comments and suggestions so....
