Anyone Have Tried Wireless Internet ?

I'm using it right now. It has its downtimes and it's a sensitive little bugger, but otherwise, very hardy and pretty fast. I have a D-Link one - so it does matter by brand. But I like it a lot smile.gif

What do you mean by wireless internet.. It can actually mean, acessing internet right from satellite or accessing it via access points which are setup by ISPs.

Anyone with more information? I would appreciate if you could give us the advantages and disadvantages in more detail.

i've used wireless internet...i was using HP laptop ZD 7000 series and Linksys router....i dont remember the model of that....and service was absolutely brilliant...there are many standards like 802.11a 802.11b and 802.11g
and i think the best one according to speed is 802.11b but i think go for 802.11g standard as it the latest one and is backward compatible as well....if you want to know more about it then you can PM or otherwise i'll posting more information about it in the same thread..for that if you want you can compile more questions of about what do you want to know and i'll be able to answer those.

I'd think by 'wireless internet, he'd mean like when you have those PCIMCIA cards, and you connect to the internet via the ISP's towers, or what have you.

Not wireless interenet like 'My house runs on 801.11 - b, so there' That's wireless networking (at least how I interpret it.

you may be right! and if that is the case then he can have any laptop which is wi-fi enabled and that will solve the problem otherwise he will have to purchase a PCMCIA card as you have already mentioned...you are also correct that it will be called wireless networking but i think RemoteConnection is talking about the wireless networking only...because he seems to be in networking(it seems from his earlier posts) and by mistake typed it as wireless internet...or may be used it as a general term

My family has a laptop with wireless internet. It definitely has its disadvantages because having wireless internet in the first place is supposed to allow you to move your computer around and still have access, but the network connection doesn't have a good range, and it can't be moved too far. Sometimes the computer will be close to the laptop and it'll still lose the signal. So all in all, I'd rather just use an ethernet cable and be assured of a constant connection.

I am having SMC Barricade g Wireless Router 2.4GHz 54 Mbps Wireless Cable/DSL as router/access point this days. It acts like LAN Adapter with 54MBps of speed. Default router's IP is 192.168.2.1 which is your getaway to your ISP. You can be using cable or wireless connection to Router. I used it computer on second floor and router on 1st floor and it did worked OK, but not OK on every place. But for same floor this solution is ideal.

Standard 802.11b is for 11MB LAN and 802.11g is for 54MB LAN.

WIRELESS IS HOT!!!

I use the wireless internet as you have described it almost exclusively. My network is encrypted on two levels, and to the best of my knowledge it is difficult for unauthorized users to obtain access. The network is very fast, since it is connected to a third generation cable router for access to the web. I think our speeds are up to 27 Mbps for downloads, and 11 Mbps for uploads. We also have encryption at the router, which requires an hexadecimal key, which we change regularly for added security. I load the key into a further-encrypted dongle that I use to set permissions for access by the other computers on the network.

The network has issues for some reason on mondays, when it gets its signals crossed with the wireless telephones in the house and office. Whenever the phone rings on Mondays, it knocks the wireless network out until after the phone conversation is concluded. On those days, until i get an answer from Linksys, I have to suffer through the issue. But once Tuesday rolls around, the service is flawless. For the money, convenience, speed, and security, I think the wireless setup is a tremendous value. Certainly far more useful than dialup. Hackers may be able to crack the encryption Ihave, since it is just a basic safeguard, but what I have on my computer, for the most part, is only valuable to me. No government secrets, patents, trade secrets, high level financial information, credit card numbers, development projects, weapon systems, or anything that really needs guarding, so I feel reasonably secure about my SOHO network.

There is really no comparison between dialup and wireless in terms of speed, stability, and cost-effectiveness. Try it. I think you will agree, Remote....

Yeah . i have an idea about wire less internet . If u have a Lap top and if you are connected to the internet in your laptop by some means then it is all the simple you can easily have wireless connection established.

Connect the LAP top to the internet . In your Laptop you will have an option to enable the wireless Device . Now once it is ennables your Laptop becomes the Server for the wireless Internet.

Note:You may Connect to the internet for your Lap top By any means.

Now that you have a Laptop server. If it is not a Lap top .Connect a wireless USB device to the computer an transmit. Now the Desktop becomes the server .

Any computer now which is closely located within the wireless range can access Internet .

Now thats all a Wireless Internet has been established.

Hey I have wireless internet on my computer right now and it usually runs around 36 Mbps. I've seen it drop to 11.0 Mbps though and I was just wondering if 36-54 Mbps is fast enough to run games online? I'm just not sure if 36-54 Mbps is decently fast or not...

I currently use wireless. The differences are as follows:
1) Depending on the hotspot you connect to, it is faster than ethernet, or slower
2) You can connect to more spots if you have the given names
3)Not too different from DSL, it is based off of DSL
The strengths are as follows:
1) Good connection time normally
2)Not hard to get, or set up
3) No fee to pay
The weaknesses are as follows:
1) Some places you need a code to connect to
2) You can not get internet while moving on train or car etc.
3) In some hotspots you have to pay for connection ie. Airports
4) The connection is not always stable.

Personally, i use and like wireless, and find it perfectly stable.
