15 Great, Free Security Programs

Saint_Michael
Well its another one of those topics of some great software to have, and many of theme have been mention several million times in this forum alone laugh.gif.

As we all know the paid security software has been getting nailed badly but its free/open source equivalents last few years, and I know that has been going on for at least two years in this forum alone with the "Best Anti-virus/firewall.adware/spyware" topics spread through the forums. I think though that this topic will kill those topics once and for all, well at least from people posting news ones at least.

Ok so let the fun begin and just a slight note I haven't tested them myself but many people will be recognize them, but I might install a couple that I don't have. So let the fun begin for the "15 Great, Free Security Programs" to have or use.

1. Zone Alarm

I been hearing great things about this software I know it's been mentioned several times here, and right now I am installing it for some triple firewall protection.
DOWNLOAD HERE

2. Comodo Firewall Pro

I vaugely heard about this but I think the description will shed some light on this firewall a bit more

QUOTE

ZoneAlarm is extremely popular, but that doesn't automatically make it the best free firewall you can find. One formidable contender is Comodo Firewall Pro, which independent testing site Matousec rated as the top firewall. Matousec found that Comodo offered the highest level of antileak protection, one measure of a firewall's effectiveness. Comodo offers true two-way firewall protection, is highly configurable, and (unlike most other firewalls) provides a great view of your system and your Internet connection.

3. Avast

Need I say more about this program? Heck if I were to put it on a rating scale I would give it a number 3 spot behind the pad stuff, but that is me though since I am using McAfee right now and it has done the job I have expected it to use.

DOWNLOAD HERE

4. AVG Anti-Rootkit

Well I know rootkits are dangerous and made several topics about them last year, but with the right protection, and paying attention to what your doing, rootkits won't reak that much damage on your computer. Now don't take that last statement as ignorance but more like I know what I am doing when it comes to security, either way you want to add another level or protection then install this application and enjoy some more added security.

5. Spyware Blaster
Although I been using spybot for a better part of 3 years now and it has done its job, I think, because I haven't seen to many problems when I scan my system. However, the description to this software does make this piece of software sound interesting to try out though.

QUOTE

Some of the nastiest kinds of spyware--autodialers, home page hijackers, and others--install themselves as ActiveX controls. Spyware Blaster protects you against them, blocking the installation of ActiveX-based malware and other types of spyware, and eradicating tracking cookies that might otherwise invade your privacy. The program works with Firefox, Opera, or Internet Explorer, and it prevents your browser from being diverted to dangerous sites. One particularly nice touch is the utility's System Snapshot, which (as you'd expect) takes a snapshot of your PC; if your computer gets infected later on, you can revert to the clean version.

6. AOL Active Security Monitor

Yeah if you use AOL and are aware of this program I guess you know it works, but when it comes to AOL anything coming from them is just a bad idea, but thats me though. Of course its role of this software is something that common sense will tell you about when protecting your computer from everyone else, but since its free I porvide a download link but really why let a program tell you what you should already know.

7. McAfee SiteAdvisor

If you don't have this installed you should slap yourself and turn the computer off, since I had this installed on my computer/browsers lets just say phishing or Trojan auto installers are not a problem. Its funny I installed it around the same time OpaQue purchased Quipis, and McAfee block the hell out of ever quipis site I went to, just because qupis/trap17.net were a haven for spammers and all that other fun stuff. So if you don't have this installed do it, and also get it installed for your browsers; IE is automatic, and Firefox has an extension for it as well.

8. LinkScanner Lite

QUOTE
This is another good tool for determining whether a Web site harbors dangerous content. Open LinkScanner Lite and type in a site URL, and the utility checks the site for dangerous scripts, bad downloads, and other hazardous content. It also warns you about phishing sites and other potentially fraudulent online operations, and it integrates with search sites in much the same way that McAfee Site Advisor does, putting icons next to search results to indicate whether they are dangerous or not. Unlike Site Advisor, though, it doesn't check whether sites harbor adware or spyware.

9. Internet Threat Meter

QUOTE
Every day, it seems, new threats hit the Internet. Symantec's Internet Threat Meter keeps you informed about the latest arrivals and includes a link to a Symantec site where you can get more information and find fixes. The program runs as a nifty little widget in Windows XP, or as a Sidebar Gadget in Windows Vista, gathering data about the latest threats and reporting the results to you.

10. Trend Micro HijackThis

QUOTE
Like it or not, no single antispyware program can detect and eradicate all spyware. Consequently your favorite antimalware utility doesn't fully protect you. If you suspect that you've been victimized by spyware, but you haven't been able to track down the source of the trouble using your usual diagnostic software, give HijackThis a try. It thoroughly analyzes your Registry and file settings, and creates a log file reporting its results. If your system is infected with spyware, that file will contain clues about the particular type you're dealing with. Though an expert can analyze the log to try to track down the problem, you shouldn't try to do any advanced analysis yourself unless you possess relevant expertise. Instead, simply upload the log file to a HijackThis Web site, and ask the community there to analyze it for you.
and just read the descriptions, yeah you know you like that break down laugh.gif. Sometimes a computer can be over protected, and people start calling themselves computer experts by having all that software installed. I bet if you just have a very basic anti-virus software, and oh windows firewall while claiming that titl and boasting we all know your lying.

11. Kruptos 2

QUOTE
Worried that someone may gain access to your most private files? Kruptos 2 uses powerful, 128-bit encryption to scramble files and folders so that only you can read them. It's particularly useful for USB flash drives and portable storage devices, which you can encrypt in the entirety. Kruptos 2 also lets you create self-extracting, encrypted archives; shred deleted files so that all traces of them vanish from your hard disk; and even disguise the filename when you encrypt a file.

12. Transaction Guard

QUOTE
This freebie from commercial security vendor Trend Micro is actually two pieces of security software in one. First, it's a spyware detector and eradicator that monitors your system in real-time for spyware and kills any it finds. Second, it introduces a "secret keyboard" to ensure that passwords and other sensitive information aren't stolen over the Internet. When you visit a site that asks for a password, instead of typing in the password, you enter it on the secret keyboard, which copies the password to the clipboard, from which it gets pasted directly into a Web form. The software runs as an ActiveX control in the System Tray.

13. CCleaner

QUOTE

When you surf the Web, you pick up many traces of your Internet activity. Your PC swells up with temporary Internet files, a history list, cookies, autocomplete entries, and lots more. In addition, programs create temporary files, file lists, and other bits of effluvia. Windows itself constantly monitors what you do, and records information about it in logs. In fact, a snoop could easily gather a great deal of information about you from stuff that's junking up your PC. CCleaner rids your system of all such traces. Not only does it enhance your privacy, but you'll regain hard disk space as well. When I used this utility for the first time, it deleted a whopping 835MB of files.

A good program, I mentioned it in one of my other best of topics, thing it was free software for cleaning up your computer and junk, and so its a good program to have, especially if you want to get rid of evidence from your wife or girlfriend that your sneaking around them porn sites laugh.gif.

DOWNLOAD HERE

14. NoScript

QUOTE
Among the biggest dangers you face when surfing the Web are boobytrapped Java and JavaScript scripts and applets. Evil doers can disguise these harmful pieces of code as useful tools, or can hide them completely while they perform their nasty routines. Unfortunately, there's no practical way for you to separate the good ones from the bad ones. But NoScript, a free Firefox extension, prevents all JavaScript and Java applets from running, except on sites that you designate as safe. The extension presents you with a list of safe sites, which you can add to. NoScript tells you when it has blocked Java or JavaScript on a site. For added protection, this remarkably powerful and flexible tool also blocks Java, Flash, and other plug-ins on sites you don't trust.
Funny I had this extension a long time ago but of course it got rather annoying that everything with a javascript got disabled so I uninstalled it, but of course I uninstalled it and I should reinstall it again but I don't go to too many booby trap javascript sites these days.

File Shredder 2

QUOTE
Delete a file and it's gone from your PC, right? Wrong. Even after you delete a file and flush it from your Recycle Bin, special software can re-create it. Of course, in general, you'd like files to stay deleted when you throw them away. File Shredder 2 overwrites any file or folder with a random string of binary data--multiple times. You have a choice of five different shredding algorithms, and using the program is a breeze: Just choose your files, tell the program to shred them, and they'll be gone forever.

Yeah Hammer a nail into your hard drive and get a new one laugh.gif, of course I would think free software for military, government, and spy documents need more then a simple file shredding program to get rid of it.

DOWNLOAD HERE

So there you go some free security software that you might like to look into, and if you already have it kudo's to you that means your computer is just a tad bit safer then everyone else.

Very comprehensive list there! Im glad to say my AV and my FW are on that list, being Avast and Comodo. And i second the good quotes of Comodo. It is powerful for advanced users, you can create your own rules etc... and yet so simple for newbies, the firewall creates its own rules as default and you can send off any security reports to the comodo techs for analysis and then advice on if you should allow or deny the connections which really helps newbies or even techies who see an unrecognised but possibly essential connection.

Ive tried and seen AVG in action but i truly prefer Avast, the AVG UI is outdated and it seems weak compared to avast. Avast comes with a connection monitor and an on access scanner to actively watch files for any unauthorized modification. Updates come daily, sometimes twice a day and its UI is very easy to use, allowing boot time scans (effectively a safe mode scan) selected file/folder scans and an addition to the right click menu to scan individual files or folders right from the right-click menu.

One thing i dont technically have is a website checker, i do use the WOT add-on for FF and the Phishtank one too which show a website's rating and compare URL's to those known to be phishing websites. But when i get in later i shall check those programs out smile.gif

Yes Thats a good list of free security softwares.I already used AVG and Awast Antivirus, but they weren't good as they didn't blocked some viruses.
But Now i use norton Internet security 2007,Well I have a full version but it is cracked.I know some would think that It is not good to crack such a good and professional Antivirus software,But when you get it free for 11 years, then there,s no need to feel that you have done something wrong. However now every virus is blocked by Norton internet security 2007 and I have no problems.
But this information is helpful for those who still want to use free security softwares.Although I would still recommend everyone to use the cracked version of norton internet security 2007. biggrin.gif

I use ZoneAlarm, AVG AntiRootkit, CCCleaner from the Freeware List and Spybot S&D(not mentoned) also a Freeware along with Spyware Doctor & Norton Antivirus 2007 to give my system maximum protection possible. Kaspersky is also a superb AV (but paid one).

Anyways great list.

Great Gatsby Fitzgerald portrays a romantic love between a man and a woman, but inside the real
meaning is much deeper. Fitzgerald depicts the 1920’s as a time of decay social and moral values,
evidence of this is the greed and the pursuit of pleasure. Jay Gatsby’s constant parties epitomized
the corruption of the American Dream as the desire for money and worldly pleasures ov....

This tutorial applies to all those people who insist upon using "End" to close their programs: End
stops the program immediately without any thought as to what's going on - it's like a high
speed train hitting a brick wall. It can cause unwanted errors and is bad programming practice in
general. END gets rids of the form, but NOT its leftovers. This leaves a bunch of memory that will
still be in use even after your program has supposedly closed. An object or variable won't be
terminated properly - it's just not a graceful exit. The only time that it'....
