| | I do belive(as a lot of people here) that religion hasn't been updated in a while. But I don't think much should be changed, if anything at all. If religion was changed, there would bound to be SOME conflicts. As in the Declaration of Indepentence, there was so much contriversy in that, because it wasn't very clear. If religion is changed, the same thing *might* happen. I do agree, though, that women should be aloud to preach in church services. I don't see why they can't in the first place. Little things like this should be changed, not a lot though. |

in my opinion religion should be updated because in this days we have other treaths and a diferent lifestyle and i think the church doesn't appeal people now. there are different issues now and they require different solutions. and our lifestyle may not be the best but it has changed and there is not many we can do, so the church should change to. the message of God is the same but i think they should find new ways to transmit it. I hate to know that women don't have an activ part on church, i'm sorry but i don't think that God would ever discriminate us!!! and also i don't understand why priest can't have children! isn't the point of humanity to reproduce and be happy? I think God does not ask for pain,he wants us to be happy and make others happy and help and respect everyone and also our home: earth with all the animals and plants and everything. and thats all.

Okay, one thing I have to say is this: I don't think the question should have been made a poll. Religion is a pretty broad topic consisting of ALOT of different types and then their branches. Some are more up to the times in the way and reason they think than others, so it's pretty difficult to say that it hasn't. I probably answered the question wrong in the vote, I should have said yes and made my point of view one of this. Sure, it should be updated, ALL THE TIME! The quesiton might have been put this way though, do you think YOUR religion is up to date? Then again, I've got a few things popping in my mind that are comingn out funny I think. Sure there are things that are outdated. . .at least in my religion. As Seventh-Day Adventists, there are many things I think need to be put into the concept of what's going on now. I still believe that we shouldn't do meat, though not necessarily just because Ellen White said that while you're sticking with not eating what the Lord said in the Bible, how about none at all. There's a lot of diseases going around in the animals, I have no desire to go out and grub on a rack of anything. There are other things that I think are a little stupid, but they're things that you're not going to get condemned for unless it's some letter of the Ellen law abiding grandparent getting up there in their years. Women are allowed to be just about anything on the church leadership, including the pastors. In fact, it's not a wrong thing for there to be a woman President of a Conference or even of the whole thing itself! (Although, I can honestly say that I don't know for sure that we have one particular person for the whole world of Adventism. . .though I think there is.) One thing that could be updated is the belief on the theater. Back in Ellen Whilte's day, the theater was that of the plays and all, not that of the movies. Sure there are things we shouldn't see, but not all of the movies are bad. That's what ratings and reviews are for. We have some of our churches that allow trapsets and electric guitars, and we sing all kinds of Christ oriented songs, and then we have the alternatives that consist of just the piano and organ, or even just one of those. My church doesn't do much of the electric guitars and drums, though we use bongos and accoustic guitars some, the grand piano and an organ with pretty up to date songs, as well as the hyms. Most of this though is because we have a wide variety of people to appease. It's the academy's church, but a nice population attending the church are the elderly. Like I said, there are things that could always change, but at least in my religion, we're pretty on track I think.

Religion is pretty dry cut. It is what it is. To make adaptations would make something new, making the old ways obsolete. If you have any actual value in your faith whatever it may be, you should follow the real ways of that faith. To change it simply because let us say for example that; women have equal rights in most of the world currently as men do, would be a misinterpretation of your beliefs. What exactly do you believe? Ah, the better question, what do you -think- you believe? If you believe in God in a Christian sense then going to church and all this other stuff is complete lunacy. The Lord said that all you need is to seek an audience with him and it will be done. If you want to cut time out of your life to go fellowship with others of your same faith, by all means please have at it. People need to understand that fellowship is a human thing. The need to be around others. To share feelings, ideas, ect. I'm not going to draw a line out for every faith but I'm sure anyone could see where this is going. Religion is a man-made thing in all reality. I'm not going to get into a science debate or anything of the such - BUT - You either really believe what you believe or you do not. What is there to update? I've watched and watched people of all religions torment themselves constantly with what is right and what is wrong and so on and so forth. It does not get you anywhere. Oh.. It gets you into Heaven, or where ever you believe you go or whatever? Well let me put another side to this. Did anyone stop to think that possibly the Bible(Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth) is a book written thousands of years ago by humans like ourselves? Did anyone stop to consider objectively the points of most religions? I'll go into just one right now for you. Doesn't it seem the least bit strange to anyone that mainstream religions like Christianity believe in somewhat of a reward system? Do good go to heaven, do bad go to hell. Isn't that what your parents did to you when you were a child? It's simple positive reinforcement. Parents do it to children, teachers do it to children, your boss at work does it. So while you snack down on your treat that you may or may not get however many years your life has left in it; Someone, Somewhere, Some time ago was laughing hysterically at the ignorance of his fellow man. Religion to some degree is a method of controlling the masses. Most religions set down good morales that people should have anyway; Without the threat of going to hell mind you. So we don't have any misconceptions about Hell; for those of you who are unaware or perhaps blinded by your "Updated" *grins @ updated* Religion.. Hell is seperation from God. Your maker. If you believe otherwise; like burning in flames for eternity, then you believe more in a painting then you do your actual God. I'm not exactly sure but during the midievil times there was a painting made describing the nine or ten levels of hell or something to that effect describing all these atrocity-like things that would happen to you if you went there. Also there were many writings about hell during that period. These works were of fiction and imagination. One last thing I would like to point out before I go - Many religions, especially around the period of midievil times used to lie to their followers. They would use the most advanced technologies to make their places of worship seem to do 'God' like induced things to keep their followers coming back to pray and participate aswell as give up their gold. Greeks, Romans, Egyptians... Is it that far fetched that Christianity would do the same to you or any other religion for that matter? Welcome to the Real Matrix Folks. Religion and Business control the modern governments of the world, and they in turn control you. I know it might come up somewhere down the line... What do I believe? I believe nothing faith wise. I know that when I die, I am merely dead. Nothing special, no craptacular stairs, no halo, no flames and burning, and no not even a simple phase to an energy form. I am dead leave it at that. And no it's not out of fear, being caught without all the information of what I -might- believe if I did believe in anything, nor is it a simple boycott to make a point to get friends. I simply believe in living my life. BUT, doing the best I can, like everyone else does.

There is no need to update religion. It will go extinct. Like the pagans it will be just a part of human history. Religion is an idealistic idea, subjected not objective. As our understanding of ourselves grows and matures we will set aside the idealistic way of thinking that religion offers us. To update religion this only means that religion itself will have to embrace the materialistic way of thinking and set aside the idealistic path. It means that we have to rewrite the book of Genesis and a lot of idealist way of thinking will change. And this is difficult for religion. Religion basically is base on idealistic nature. Some religion might be able to do that with ease specially those religion who focuses on spiritualism. But those like the Roman Catholic, I dont think so. But time is changing and they are being left behind. Religion being passive it will have a time that it will cease to exist. But of course not in our lifetime, maybe we will give it 1 thousand years. It maybe hard to accept today since we are groomed and raised as believers. But havent you noticed that the devoted believers are decreasing. Karl Marx was right when he said that religion is an opium in our society. It slows and hinders the progress of our society. The people behind religion doesnt want us to change and progress since they will be left behind and might be out of bread.

Religion is in fact being updated constantly, since religions are not what their leaders say... "Religion is the opiate of the people" said Karl Marx... it's in the people, the cultures. Due to globalization, culture are mixing, or rather than mixing, they're being absorbed by a new univocous vision of what culture is .... and we can talk a hundred pages about it, but getting down to the grounds, you must not forget that religion is dependant of all this phenomenon called globalization (they are in internet, radios, TV, etc.). And why is it dependant? Because economy is changing, and that's the base of societies! (I'm not saying all that matters is money, because money is just the way we care about economy, but saying politics, arts, science, philosophy, institutions, they all happen in a determined moment and time, not in other one, in a society during its development.) So, as time goes by, and the world still spins around... what is Ratzinger doing?? Keeping a struggle against Liberation Theology and other approximations of religions to science and Marxism. Why? Tell me, why do religions exist? What was a primitive way of explaining the world became in the Middle Age (and before) to be used as a tool to oppress the masses. Also today. What has changed is that the group of values that Catholic Church and Co. defends are the ones which are worth for the new high class, which wants to have people oppressed... It's a long story, I hope you can understand it. If anything is not clear, please let me know so I'll fix it. I'm just too tired now and my can't write in English anymore. But it's a hell of a topic and I'll be glad to keep discussing it.

QUOTE I agree with you that religion is outdated, but I don’t think it needs to be updated. I am now living in an Asian city where over 90% of the population has no religion. People here live a fruitful and meaningful life without the burden of religion. People are really much more open minded without religion. I think it is sad that some people simply cannot live without other people telling them what to do with their lives. One of the commonest misunderstandings is that the ancient people had “wisdom”. But I think the only place you can find wisdom is in science, the only field where knowledge can accumulate to become wisdom.
Modern people (probably except the Americans) have much boarder exposure in a globalized world and I don’t think those crappy ancient texts can ever tell us anything about how to deal with modern lives. My comment is: Don’t bother with updating religion. Scrap it.
I agree that "Religion" is a burden, congregations are more like a herd of sheep, bein led to do/beleive what the "Church" says. However "Religion" is "outdated", but if they change things, then that would kind of blow the cover of the conspiracy that is "Religion" and the "Church", and that would defeat the purpose of having it. mid you, I am a Religious Skeptic, not that I dont beleive in a higher power, but in the sense that I think "Religion" and the "Church" are full of BS, Big time. How is it that 500yrs after the alleged "Miracles" performed by "Jesus", that the bible gets written, by probably the greatest playwright of all time, William Shakespeare? or that the similarities between "Religions" are so similar, as pointed out by "Zeitgeist: The Movie", that humanity have failed to see the ploy that has been set before them? Its Garbage, all of it, Western "Religion" is a con, and probably the greatest con of all time. George Carlin (May He Rest In Peace, *Moment of Silence for a Genius*) was right: QUOTE Religion convinced the world that there's an invisible man in the sky who watches everything you do. And there's 10 things he doesn't want you to do or else you'll go to a burning place with a lake of fire until the end of eternity. But he loves you! ...And he needs money! He's all powerful, but he can't handle money! People need to open their eyes, and remove head from sphincter before they decide from themselves, but this is just my opinion, along with many others. As my dad says, "There is only one "God"... YOUR's" *Disclaimer: If any "Religious Fanatics" of any kind were offended by reading this, to bad, it's protected by freedom of speech. It's my opinion, and no, I am not forcing it on you, you read this all by yourself (I Hope).*
