I think the best two p2p programs are limewire and emule for these reasons, emule has a good thingy that shows you the parts of a file you need to download, and it keep/gets rid of good/corrupt parts for you...limewire is fast and there is alotof stuff on it!!! and they are both free easy downloads, i still dont undrstand bit torrent fully...so i stayed away from that, btw if you use e... read more.
You can use an open source peer-to-peer application to insure that there are no backdoors. I can think of two open source and free p2p apps at the moment: Shareaza and BitTorrent
I would suggest using Shareaza out of the two snlildude87 mentioned, but I would suggest you also you WinMX. I use both because what one can't find, the other can most of the time. I started out with WinMX, but I like Shareaza better now, because the downloading is faster. The searching seems to be faster with WinMX, but lately I find a file with, let's say, 100 sources, and it will sit there claiming to be "connecting", but it never does. I've tried this with 40 downloads in a row and it did the same thing. I made sure I was connected and everything. Well, I would suggest Shareaza strongly.
I would have to say that Limewire has been very safe for me. I have never goten one wyrm or virus or even a file that wasn't what I was looking for from them.
I recommend emule. They allow you to search for archives (i.e. RAR and ZIP files), which is helpful when trying to download full albums or other kinds of files that normally come in collections.
well there is mIRC and URL=http://www.emule-project.net/home/perl/general.cgi?l=1]eMule[/URL] those are true peer to peers, and the connections are usually pretty fast if you got cable connection or better, but you do need to learn how to use them here is a good tutorial for IRC http://www.mirc.com/irc.html, there are others out there that might be beter. Just look for them.
It's almost impossible to find P2P application that is secure, since you will always face another person in another edge of the world that they might be a hacker, since you're sharing you're file, it is not impossible for they who are expert to gain information about your ip address and any other information... even worse, i have heard that someone can have remote access to others computer just because he is using iMesh..

I use emule plus and dc++ with reverse connect, no problems with spyware at all.
If you stick to open source apps, you should be faily safe from spy- and adware. If they put spyware (or adware) in an open source app, people would notice, because people read the code.
So, stay away from Kazaa and exeem and anything else close-sourced. That should get you a good bit on the way. But then you can of course be vulnerable to p2p worms and so on. Oh it never ends!

remember, this is asking for safe peer to peer programs. I dont think there isnt any safe programs, unless bit torrent like for Linux Distro's .
Limewire Lite: I wouldn't suggest it if you are not going to pay the $18.88 for the pro version. It has a very 'attractive' look to it.
Limewire PRO: If you are going to get Limewire, get the PRO or dont get any. It also has a very 'attrative' look to it. If you dont want to spend any money for Limewire PRO, you should get : Ares It is slightly slower than PRO, but faster than Lite. It also uses less system resorces. I notice games slow to a crawl on Limewire, but not on Ares. If your computer downright sucks, get Ares. Or get: WinMX is kind of a fuse between Limewire and Ares, it uses little system resorses, and is kinda attractive. I dont really like WinMX because it lies to you sometimes. It says its connecting, yet in reality it cant find any sorces. BITTORRENT GET IT NOW. <_>
I thought Soulseek was free of spyware... thatīs what I use most. I also use Azureus and Emule.
Things are going dangerous lately... maybe Iīll have to try Shareaza How about DC+? Has spyware?
Ok here is basically what i think of peer to peer programs. There is no safe per to per program. If you download a program off of someones computer you can't insure its virus free. If you want to use these programs then virus scan every file you download or your computer will have like 1 million viruses like my old one.
