What do yall think about the pound putting animals to sleep if they are not adopted in a certian period of time? I had 2 cats and both were spayed and neutered. Then we started feeding a stray and she hung around. She then had 2 kittens and then later 1 of them had 3 and the other had 5 then the stray had 3 more. We couldnt get her spayed because we couldnt afford it. But we had 16 cats! And this all happend in about 1 year. We gave 2 away 2 ran off and 1 was hit by a car. So that leaves 11. We cant really afford to feed them all but we do and they are healthy. But we got to get rid of some. We want to keep only 4. But we dont want to take them to the pound cuz we have kinda grown attached to them so we dont want them put to sleep. That is why i want to knwo what you think about the pounds way of doing things. I think the pound should advertise or something and get good homes for them before they put them to sleep. I know they cant keep every animal they get forever but they could put more effort into getting them good homes. BTW if anyone lives in louisiana and you wanty a cat PM me hehehe

I think it sucks...simple enough? Well, at least they could give them more time but around here(MN/ND) its like, no time, I hate it. FYI me and my mom=dog/cat freaks :/ well for me I like cats more, but eh.

That's a touchy subject. Unfortunately, the most practical solution would be to put the cats down. As for the pound, animal shelters are non-profit organizations, they can't spend money for ads on every pet. It's sad how many they have to put down, but there's just so many without a home. Listen to Bob Barker: have your animal spayed or neutered.

i believe they have to be put down *ONLY* when they are too old already, or they are suffering from any illness which would just prolong their agony. why not make a website for them? like an adoption site. then link to other cat sites out there to promote the cats you have for adoption? may be a nice project for you. there would be cat lovers out there willing to give your extra cats some home.

I hate how animals can just be killed if they're not adopted. True, it helps to spay and neuter your pets (and I encourage all pet owners with dogs or cats that are around 6 mos. of age to do so!) but if you can't afford it, where do you turn to? We adopted our puppy (I shouldn't say puppy - she's a pudgy 2 year old with more brains than a few of my friends) from the animal shelter: a far better alternative than going purebreed shopping, in my mind. They had gotten her an appointment to be spayed with the Houston SPCA, where they did it for only $30. Which is definitely worth it! A lot of male dogs are on the prowl in our neighborhood. I've visited a couple of no-kill shelters and I'm surprised at how much love the owners shower on their pets. These are victims of abuse, of neglect, of torture, the likes of which we humans may never understand. And yet, even the sweetest of animals can go to be euthanized on a whim. If they're not adopted in time, they may never brighten anyone's lives. No animal asks to be chained up and caged away. No animal ever wants to be neglected. It just happens. And that's one of many cruelties that humankind has put on animals. Anyways, yes, I hate it. If an animal is in pain, I would put it out of its misery. But if an animal is spry and healthy, yet there is no room for it, I would never have the heart to kill it. Knowing me, I'd probably bring it home and keep it, come hell or highwater. Anyways...yeah, I strayed off the topic a bunch :/

Maybe they should give the animal away for free if they're considering killing it instead of actually killing the animal. It would make somebody's life more enjoyable. (The animal wouuld be more happy too)

I'd be happy to take a few off your hands...I don't know what the familia would think of it though. We've already got one cat, and I don't know if anyone wants to put up with any more! haha...aside from that, I live all the way in New Jersey, and that's a damn long trip to make...heh Anyway, sometimes I think putting an animal to sleep is perfectly necessary. In the event of terminal illness, there is absolutely no reason to prolong its agony. Thus, to relieve it of future suffering would be the most practical thing to do... Geez, I don't want to bring euthanasia into this at all, but I can't help but think about it at the same time. I guess that's a topic for another day

Anything should be put down if it's in pain and dying. I do include humans in that, if the person wants it. Otherwise, on the surface, I don't see anything wrong with it either way. There is peace in sleep and death. (I imagine it's peaceful just being an animal too.) They won't have to starve in bad shelters, waiting behind bars forever (applies to both good and bad). If aliens invaded us and turned us into their pets, I wouldn't... mind? our current shelter policies being applied to us. I might want to be 'put down' after a while. We would all like to die a painless death.

i don't agree at all about putting an animal asleep just because it's taking that one longer to find a home than some of the others. my adopted dog, Hannah, was actualy schedualed to be put down, but she wasnt put down on schedual, and we came along a bit later and brought her home. i'm quite glad they didn't out her down, because she's a puppy all the time the only time i approve of putting an animal down is if it's visciouse and can't be re-trained to not be evil, or if it's going through a lot of pain and isnt going to survive anyways. but for anything else, i'm 100% against it.

Well that's a tought situation and I certainly wouldn't like to be in one. You should think about it earlier but that doesn't help you right now, does it? So of course, you can't put them to sleep! I'd suggest contacting the media and telling them your story and maybe they'll make a story, which will bring you money and you can also say to people that you have to get rid of some of the cats and they can put your phone number there...or somehting like that! Other option is to print a few posters around the city and give your number aswell...also be sure to post the cutest pictures... Maybe you could also use email-fowarding-medium, which is great for that sort of stuff - just email info and pics to as many friends as you have and ask them to forward to as many friends they can...do the math and you'll se the number of people grows amazingly fast! I don't know...maybe learn a few of those cats to go to neighbours house and maybe they'll want to take one or two )) I wish you all the best and don't give up!!

When I was 5 years old I had a beautiful black and fluffy rabbit. I had two actually, but I liked this one the best. I do not really know how this happened, but I guess my rabbit got sick. It went over pretty fast, so I thought he was okey. But after some time again he got sick again... or not really sick but he got some kind of sickness because he had been sick. Hard to explain. Of course me and my mum took him to the vet, because we wanted him to be well again. He was the most beautiful rabbit I had ever seen, he was kind, caring and simply gorgeous. He was the perfect rabbit for me. But the vet said that it was nothing she could do - and even though I loved my rabbit and knew that he could still live, we decided to put him to sleep. It was the best for him, but as the 5 year old I was I did not want to do that. I remember I said something like this: "-I'll rather live with a sick rabbit, then have no rabbit at all." But now I realise it was the best for him. He was suffering. So with this story in mind... When it is best for the animal to be put to sleep, I see no problem with that. When they are suffering I do not see why that should be a problem? Many animals live in animal shelters and when no one wants to have them... well sometimes it is simply better for the animal. What I really find horrible and disgusting, is when animal-owners leave their animals outside to die, drop the off somewhere and leaves them on there own to die or something like that. That is horrible.

Its indeed sad to see a animal go if they cant get adopted and so forth. There should be at least measures to save em if they cant get a home for whatever reason. However, if they were sick and somewhat there is no hope after all avenues exhausted, I could understand, but nonetheless tis still a sad occasion for the animal to be put down, sick or not.

Replying to keiferI'm doing a report in school about putting animals to sleep. I don't think it is very fair to living creatures to die just because they where not adopted soon enough. I work at a animal shelter and see those poor animals there all alone and every day I want to take the home with me. I really wish I could afford it. But yeah I'm with you when you feel bad for not feeding those poor cats. If I lived down there I would come get some of them. Hiphipgurl067 -reply by hiphopgurl067

I'm not a big fan of "Putting animals to sleep" unless they are in some real pain and it would just put them out of misery. I don't think anything should live only to feel pain.
