Public Schools With Internet Security?

Seemliss
Well, today I learned in my school (I'm in 9th grade) that the network has no security at all. Most public schools, as I have learned, don't protect themselves, they hire somebody when something goes wrong. I believe this is truly wrong. I was in the Computer Lab doing an important test over the Net, and the internet go shutdown. Apparently somebody hacked it. They didn't have access to it until they called the Network Security guy down to fix it.

This is pretty bad. What do you guys think?

Wow, interesting. I know at my school (i'm a senior highschool) they protect it pretty well. It's difficult to get in; however, it is possible, it's not bank security. I think schools need to stay secure to not only protect their systems, but the systems of their students. Many students connect jumpdrives /flash drives they use at home to school computers and could easily transmit a virus. Also, schools need to protect their database and make sure their communications network is stable.

Of course. Standard procedure. If they collected teachers' paypal accounts to spend money on new things for the classes, someone could easily access the information and use it. And, especially in my school, they try acting like they know whats happening (as Ive warned them about it before) and that makes it worse. Plus, I know students at the school that bring hacks/viruses using jumpdrives just to mess with the school.

Its a known fact that if you rely on the use computer you gotta protect them yet many people just dont have to time or funds to do it. I can understand why schools dont want to spend a lot of money setting up secure computer system. The reason is time and money, If you have to pay a proffesional to do this and I mean a real professional not just anyone who knows abit about computers it will cost schools alot. At schools where young people are you wouldnt expect there to be much security as spending alot of money to protect against hacks from kids is not worth the time and money because not many kids will be able to do much damage if any at all. Now on the other hand you can expect Universities and other types of colleges to have a solid security system in place. If they dont they I suggest you dont go to that school your records might get lost and all your owrk would be for nothing.

Well I wish mine were the same way! With my school they OVER protect it, they block everything and they also block access to everything! It seems like they must have ten firewalls! Well even though I am in out AOIT program which deals with our schools network and management out network administrator is very strict with telling us what he does. We have numerous wireless access points around the school and NO ONE is told the passwords, not even the teachers. If they want to use the wireless our admin has to go put the password in for them. It's not just our school either, it is our whole district. For example, at one point me and my friends had to do research for a paper we had and it was about Abraham Lincoln and we tried to google a picture of him and it blocked everything with the reason of "Pornography" it was hilarious and stupid at the same time. I mean since we are senior high students you think that they would trust a little more than what they do. I can understand blocking sites like myspace, which students always find a new proxy to get around the blocks anyways.

So maybe it is just your school that is like this? I thought that there were more protected schools that not, or at least from what I usually hear. Do you happen to live in some kind of small town or is it just that they aren;t very tech savy?

Either way, there are most likely pros and cons to having it be so open!

It isn;t very hard to install easy firewalls into a server, maybe you should ask them to hire you?! lol

All of the schools I have been to have security for those connected to the network whether school computers or personal computers brought to school. They use a program called WebSense which blocks out bad sites and more can be added tot he blocking list and they also control what users can do. Of course all of my schools have also had computer specialists who can fix the problems instead of having to call a repair man as well. Maybe your school has a low budget but if they take the time to call a repairman they mine as well hire someone.

ok so its like this: the ICT technicians at my school are complete idiots, once last year at

Schools have been making people write things down and write essays on lined paper and all that jazz
