Philip Pullman - His Dark Materials - Discussion about the three books & the upcoming movies

lihuyt
Philip Pullman - His Dark Materials is a story of three books which follows the 11-year-old Lyra Belacqua through a terrifying, facinating, beautiful & sometimes funny adventure.

The trilogy contain three books:

The Golden Compass
QUOTE
In The Golden Compass, readers meet for the first time 11-year-old Lyra Belacqua, a precocious orphan growing up within the precincts of Jordan College in Oxford, England. It quickly becomes clear that Lyra's Oxford is not precisely like our own - nor is her world. In Lyra's world, everyone has a personal dæmon, a lifelong animal familiar. This is a world in which science, theology and magic are closely intertwined.
The Subtle Knife
QUOTE
In The Subtle Knife, readers are introduced to Will Parry, a young boy living in modern-day Oxford, England. Will is only twelve years old, but he bears the responsibilities of an adult. Following the disappearance of his explorer-father, John Parry, during an expedition in the North, Will became parent, provider and protector to his frail, confused mother. And it's in protecting her that he becomes a murderer, too: he accidentally kills a man who breaks into their home to steal valuable letters written by John Parry. After placing his mother in the care of a kind friend, Will takes those letters and sets off to discover the truth about his father.

The Amber Spyglass
QUOTE
The Amber Spyglass brings the intrigue of The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife to a heartstopping close, marking the third and final volume as the most powerful of the trilogy. Along with the return of Lyra, Will, Mrs. Coulter, Lord Asriel, Dr. Mary Malone, and Iorek Byrnison the armored bear, The Amber Spyglass introduces a host of new characters: the Mulefa, mysterious wheeled creatures with the power to see Dust; Gallivespian Lord Roke, a hand-high spy-master to Lord Asriel; and Metatron, a fierce and mighty angel. And this final volume brings startling revelations, too: the painful price Lyra must pay to walk through the land of the dead, the haunting power of Dr. Malone's amber spyglass, and the names of who will live - and who will die - for love. And all the while, war rages with the Kingdom of Heaven, a brutal battle that - in its shocking outcome - will reveal the secret of Dust.

His Dark Materials has long been my favourite books, and I love the seriousity in the books, and the "what is really out there"-feeling.

This is a Topic, not a News so I would like to know what you thought about the books, what you thought about the start & ending, and what the mysteries really is all about.

I thought the first two books were insanely good. A great read for anyone.

I didn't ever get round to finishing the third book, I got kinda bored, plus it was the largest book of the three and not as gripping as the first two I thought.
Just my opinion though - definitely worth reading.

Tell us what books are really messed up, but not necessarily good/bad (9)
I myself just started reading the book "American Psycho" by Bret Easton Ellis. It's seriously
the most effed up book I have ever read. I was reading during "DEAR" at my school today ("Drop
everything and read".... hella retarded name) and my mouth gaped open in awe at what I was reading.
I was like oh em gee, dudes!! This stuff is messed up. This guy, the "protagonist" (Though
the reader kind of hates him too), is a psychotic. He is very homophobic and hateful towards almost
everyone . He rapes his girlfriend. He went up to this bum and started offeri....
  12. Books Converted Into Movies Or Movies Into Books.

Hello! I hated Harry Potter. It was good at the first few movies, but it just got worse. I have
lost interest. Unforunate Events was good, I liked it. It was funny, but in the movie the wedding
play was supposed to be before they moved into Monty's house. Otherwise, it would have been
better. If you would like to say which book should be a movie, say it here or share your comments of
the movies that are already out. I like books converted into movies, but the novels thay come out
with for the movies are weird. Most have 8 SCREENSHOTS FROM THE MOTION PICTURE! ....
  13. Bret Easton Ellis
    His Books.. (1)
I don't know if many people read his books, maybe some have read American Psycho but aren't
really into the author. I happen to be a very big fan of him, it all started when i read The Rules
of attraction. Its about 3 people (Sean, Lauren, and Paul) Sean happens to really like Lauren, and
Lauren kind of likes Sean, but at the same time Lauren is still in love with victor. Meanwhile, Paul
(lauren's ex) has a crush on Sean. Another character happens to have a crush on sean...but its
not so promising, and she is probably my favorite character in the whole book....

and Demon's" Both outstanding books! Great plot! Unexpected endings! Kept moving to
keep me interested! Very good! If you havent read either of them for any reason, religious
or not, I would suggest reading them! They are great. Now my truly favorite trilogy... or at

A small investigation about most popular books (94)
The question is very simple, what is your favourite boook? And why? I have also added a small pool
about how many books do you read each year. Anyway my favourite is L.A. Confidential written by
James Ellroy. It's a very good police story with a intriguing plot, but it's also a
masterpiece of politic and social analize. The power games of institutions, the corruption that have
attacked police and government and the general undeground atmosphere are the pillars fo this
beautiful book. It isn't a simply police book, but a fresco of a society and of a period of ....
