| | I primarily use a linux OS, so I end up using more of Open Office than I used to when I was on Windows. OO is not the only Office suite alternative to MS word, however. There is Abi Word, which is pretty cool, and there is the K-suite of office tools. KWord, KPresent, KSpread, etc etc. They integrate well into the KDE environment. Another good word processor which I used for a long time was called Atlantis.
While I don't know of the K-suite, I am sure Abi word and Atlantis have versions for windows, because I installed them on the college computers some time back. Sorry I don't have the download urls here, I'm too lazy to search and I don't remember. Just google it if you want them |

I find OpenOffice very similar to MS Office. The toolbars and keyboard shortcuts are pretty much the same. It's also better because A) it's free!!! it can make PDFs C) it's cross platform D) it's not from Microsoft (it doesn't have product activation and all sorts of other M$ things in it)

Actually, StarOffice was originally designed by Sun Microsystems for widespread use through out the United States and many western nations (The name StarSuite is the name given to the product in Asia). StarOffice is still extremely popular, with 61 million downloads. It was so popular, that they descided to give the source code to the open source community, and OpenOffice was born. Sun Microsystems is still very much invovled in the development of OpenOffice, but it still remains free. Anyway, I do use OpenOffice every day. I even got it made the primary office suite used in our school. I can't see where the next version will take us.

I WISH I could get my school to use OpenOffice, instead of Microsoft Office. Believe me, the people at my school wouldn't know any good program. I (and my friends) cannot convince anyone to use open source software. I'd really like to have OpenOffice as the main office suite at my school (or at least for some classes of mine..).

Abiword came with my linux distro(damnsmalllinux), but I decided to download OOo, and was really impressed... It had a lot of great features and was a good alternative... I haven't spent as much time with it yet, so I'm not exactly sure how everything works, but it looks really good so far.

I first heard about OpenOffice from an awesome computer instructor of mine by the last name of Skaggs. He also told us about http://www.NoNags.com which is an awesome freeware site. He also mentioned that OpenOffice was made by a guy who hated Bill Gates and hoped that OpenOffice would take away business from Microsoft. Does anyone know any more on that?

well, joshua I think someone fooled you. Openoffice.org is basically an open source software and it was carried from Sun Microsystem's Star Office. Both openoffice.org & star office are similar. It was not made or started by one person..It is a combined effort of hundreds of programmers

Hackers Focus Efforts On Firefox, Safari, And Office

Ubuntu Linux As Free Operating System Alternative

tried Ubuntu Linux as it was recommended as a good first Linux distro. Ubuntu is not the easiest

should be a free Windows knock off which it is not. Ubuntu is build on a Linix core or kernel and is
a different Open Source and free as in to use operating system. This brings us to t....
