Having seen that topics related to religion get so much attention, i thought that it would not be a bad idea to start one to increase my popularity!!!!
On a serious note, i have never been able to understand that why we are becoming more and more obssessed with religion as we are evolving. Our ancestors, who were not enlightened by modern science, believed in things like rain god , sun god and stuff like that. Thats understandable, since they have very little knowledge of the things around them and how they work.
But what about today's people. I m also a follower of religion and i don't discard religion as such. But what i feel strange about is that in todays world when we r trying to show ourselves as rational biengs on one side , we are fighting with each other on the other side.
In fact people using next generation technology like us often sprang up questions like "Is Christianity the best religion?". and the more important point is that the person who started this is not exception. most of us r so obssessed that we make that topic an instant hit which i think is a total waste of time.
i follow a religion just because since almost 99.9% of human beings follow one so i dont want to be like standing out of the crowd. but i m not obssessed. i don't disregard or point fingers on other people's religion and don't mind much if someone says something about my religion because what i feel is that if there is god then he will take care of that person in whatever way he feels right. And if there is no god then what is the point in fighting.
thats why i oppose any topic like the one above.
MY APPEAL TO ALL IS THAT STOP THAT OBSSESSION WITH RELIGION INSTEAD BE OBSSESSED WITH THE WELL BIENG OF MANKIND
I m not kind of trying to preach something but this is what i feel............

Being in a religion isn't a bad thing, unless you're in one that commits/promotes evil. Many religious people around the world go around helping those in need. Many others, that aren't in a religion, don't. So, being obsessed with religion is like being obsessed for the well being of mankind. Plus, if you can't do it, God can.

I don't think that we are becoming "more and more obsessed with religion as we are evolving". Au contraire, I believe that we're deviating more and more away from religion as we understand how life 'works'. As we evolve, our understanding of the intracacies of life increases. Just take a look at how far science has come along. Heck, the church was once more powerful than the king. Is that the case today? No doubt, religion is such a deep-rooted concept that will never fade away. There are bound to be believers and followers... but to the extent where "us evolving = an increased obsession"? I don't think so. That's just my humble opinion, of course.

Athiests and agnostic do exist by the way. And i know don' go out of the way to stand out. I mean say tht too Martin Luther King Jr. and Ghandi who stood out for freedom and not to judge people on religion. People like you are the ones who make the world the same everyday. By the way i'm not religious along with about 50% of my friends.

Most of my friends are not religious. Some of my ancestors were atheists. I disagree wholeheartedly with the idea that "we are becoming more and more obsessed with religion as we are evolving." I mean, the effing crusades, dude! There were plenty of wars fought over religion and stuff, and now we hardly even care about it. I follow a religion because it makes me feel good about life and other things. I enjoy taking part in my religion, and I do not do it to fit in with others. Though your idea of being more concerned with mankind rather than with religion is an interesting one. My rabbi, who was on the something-or-other show (I forgot the name... it's the guy with the really white hair on CNN or something that's hella old and kind of bald; he wears suspenders) after Katrina and responded to the question "Where was God when Katrina hit New Orleans?" with the question "Where was mankind when Katrina hit New Orleans?" It's an interesting idea. Humankind is making all these ecologically insane decisions, and thus the environment (or God) is responding with these natural disasters. It's the humans fault for allowing all this to happen, mostly blamed upon Global Warming (As heat rises, winds increase, storms increase), and thus we should be more dependant upon ourselves than God who gave us the change to not make it happen. But i don't think we should say that talking about religion is not an OK thing to do here. It's a somewhat scientific board right here, and since religion is almost the opposite of science, we have to talk about it. Kind of like talking about 0 when talking about infinity... yeah. And your asking us to not talk about religion seems a lot like preaching to me.

I find it funny when people say stuff like this. For example when someone says "You can't say something like that about God! He'll have your ear (Not always ear, btw ) off!" or "God wouldn't agree with us!", etc Well...If God doesn't like what we're doing, and he's as powerful as you say he is, why doesn't he stop us?

Apurva, free speech prevents that. Religion promotes morals, which are important to keep a society functioning (if people are allowed to do whatever they please, anarchy ensues). However, when religion results in stealing, killing, etc., then it no longer helps society and instead inhibits it, at which point the religion should either be stopped or "reset" to it's earlier state. Personally, I don't like religion, because it means that people are blindly following something that may very well not be the truth. It's like watching someone walk down a dirt road that goes East, when the place they want to get to is West. Religion can blind people to certain truths. For example, if scientists were able to discover, without a doubt, that humans actually did evolve, how many devoted religious people do you think would be willing to stop their silliness and turn to the truth for the betterment of mankind (you may ask how this would better mankind, and in many cases it may not matter, but in others, it may distract minds that could otherwiseuse certain knowledge to come up with advances that would help humanity as a whole)? Chances are, very few. Most religion isn't so much a moral or ethical problem as it is "willful ignorance", and I personally despise willful ignorance.

There are many ways to answer this question. One way is: He stops many of us, at certain times. Many people convert their ways. And many other people help others convert. To you, this may seem like the person is doing the work, but God is working through them. Another way to answer such a question is: it's not time to stop everything. God is very patient. He wants many people to turn from their evil ways, and start living righteously. As for blasphemy. You could say it, i just wouldn't recommend it. Especially, if you take it to the grave. Not a good idea.

The discussion of religion is a nessecery evil to combat the movement of religion. It's a curse to the world. If you don't think so, then you must be religious. it's a doctrine, a dogma, and a business of fear and control, and it bypasses any chance of becoming enlightned, by these very qualities!

Religion is not much to get all happy about its just the way in which people express their beliefs and ways. I myself do not follow any type of religion I just go off beliefing that something created all of us here on Earth but am not calling it God. People choose how they want to live their lives whether to help or hurt people. Ways that direct people into a certain path in how they will live their lives is what they may watch because they think since it is being presented alot on television it must be ok to do in real life. If you start watching violence on T.V at a very young age and no parents to care on what you watch your life will not turn out so great. If you watch violence at a young age but your parents or guardians are obedant at a certain level and do family activities I am sure you will not turn out as a bad person.

QUOTE(BooZker @ Jun 1 2006, 12:14 AM) How do you figure that. So people who dont believe in God kill people?
no. but because there's no moral standard, people can't say that they've done good/bad things, because there is no good and bad. if person A killed person B, and person C does not believe in God, then person C can't say that the killing was wrong, because he has no standard to back it up. i'm confusing myself x.x
