M2i Heliodisplay - The newest free-space projector

Spyk3z
During some research I discoverd this cool gadget. The thing is a projector yes but it's a free-space projector the images and vedio is shot out of the base in to the air and forms the display out of thin air. You can control it with your fingers, it can be hooked to tv tuners and pc displays with the standard drivers included when you buy one from the maker.

Here is a flash vedio of it in action. real footage.

And a few pics

Wow simply Wow. That is an amazing piece of technology. I wonder how much one of those things cost because I didn't know they had those kinds of things on the consumer market at all. I've always wanted one of those too. If it can be hooked up to Tv tuners and stuff I wonder If I could play DDR with the thing, that would cool to have arrows floating in the air.

Yep, i agree, this really is an incredible piece of technology, but as always, is at an incredibly expensive price. It really is a shame that these amazing pieces of technology are never at a reasonable price.
I'm sure the items would be modified further by other people, if it was cheaper to purchase. Many people don't buy the product due to the high price.

That is a really interesting piece of work. If it wasn't so much money I would maybe buy it but I can stick to paying less than $100 to hook up something to the television. Sure it isn't as mobil or can be place in thin air but that's ok. If it worked for computers that would be cool. It would save a lot of space and make desktops more portable. lol but that is what laptops are for.

What would be cool is if they made a cable package or something in which that recieves a signal from the nearest cable company and you could just whip out the screen wherever you are and you can watch television. Of course that would make things even more expensive but it still would be nice.

I saw this earlier on youtube and I was very impressed. Image quality doesn't seem to be very good but the fact that it is projected into mid-air is really impressive. Even if these were the price of normal monitors I don't think I would purchase one because of the blurry images. However, if the quality got better I could really see this being used for movies and games.

Well, the thing includes the wires software and drivers to use it with your pc just to let you know. And i like your idea in the second paragraph that would be very nice to just imagine in 5 years how far technology like this would be?

Oh, yeah, I read about the Helio display about a year or more ago. It's certainly impressive technology, but really it's not very useful at the moment. Aside from scenereos where portability is key, why would someone buy a Helio display when one could get a normal display for much, MUCH cheaper (even when prices go down, I'm sure that Helio will cost more than standard television/monitor designs for decades to come). As I have said dozens of times, efficiency is the key to business success, and this Helio display, in most cases, wouldn't be the most efficient, which means that most people won't buy it, which means that research and development on it will be slowed due to lack of interest (as far as business is concerned, anyway).

NASA has long ago invented an ion drive, but they don't use it because it's not economically efficient.

Right thats it you can close the technology section down now, The perfect piece of new technology has been found. Now how long do I have to wait till I can throw away my keyboard, monitor and mouse? This is about as intuitive as it gets computer interface wise, baring mind control natch. Do you recon they have a test scheme I can get on for free, $9000 is a bit out of my students price range ah well at least the future can begin. now to get working on teleporters and I'll be all set.

Seriously this coupled with voice control is probably the next step in HCI (Human Computer Interface) as it offers a simple way to navigate (just imagine the Vista flip feature but in actual 3D space, cool huh?) Ok so I won't be investing in this yet but its nice to know that it is there for when I perfect perpetual motion and become mega rich.

hmm.. i guess this will have to be refined alot more before we see it being used anywhere comercially. the idea is great and it looks awesome. reminds me of the screen they had in the atrix to operate zion however u spell it. ;o neway, i've always wondered when technology like this would actually become reality as it seems so surreal that such things can actually exist. a 3d touchscreen... pretty dam cool if u ask me, i still love the way this thing projects data. hope to see more of it in the future.

wow, very nice biggrin.gif
At the moment though it doesn't have that many practical applications.. . . i mean, a montiro can show all that in much better quality.
As the price of such technology comes down and its quality improves it might start becoming a feaseable aternative to displays of now. Just a bit of a novelty and tech demo at the moment it seems smile.gif

Well, in any case, I wouldn't attempt to purchase this before they've got the "waver" effect completely fixed and cleared up the image quite a bit.

I agree Imagine walking inside your creation? That would be the greatest feeling I think but the cost of that. Wow.

See that is really the original point to those kinds of creations. They use those kinds of displays a lot in planetary simulators and research right now. As far as use in other fields go, that's climbing but is not popular as we speak but it will be eventually I believe. I've actually seen a documentray on the Science Channel that used one of these things they did research in astrophysics and astrobiology trying to find other planets the could sustain life.

They used computers and such to build specific planetary conditions to see if those kinds of conditions could hold life as we know it. Overall thios technology has great promise in the scientific world, and I think possibly the gaming industry later in the future as well.
