Err, well actually Counterstrike was actually a free multiplayer Half-Life mod. The single player version was charged for but that came a lot later. I'm also pretty sure that you could get Counterstrike SOURCE (which is probably what you were referring to) free if you already owned HL2 but don't quote me on that. Anyone claiming that having to own half-life first makes the first Counterstrike not free might consider that a similar argument could apply to other free games. You have to own Windows to play them. This means that only free Linux games are truly free. As most Linux users aren't gamers this means that there are pitifully few truly free games in the world... Mods are really good for getting value out of games you buy. There were some pretty good HL mods. It seems most of the mods for HL2 and Far Cry never get past the development stage. Perhaps Ubisoft & Valve need to make better And $25-$50!!!! In the UK we're still paying £25-£50!!! That's about $45-$90 at current exchange rates. Makes me glad of Steam - they only sell in $US meaning I can get most of my games bought through them for a little more than a tenner! Free's still a good price though!

You shouldn't knock all free FPS games...some of these games have a lot of effort and thought put into them. Obviously not all of them are going to be up to HL2 specs, but dammit man, they're FREE! Kuma Games puts out a number of free FPS games that are completely free, no registration or any other BS. Dam ngood material for gaming on a budget!

Very well said HiveTyrant I fully agree with your statement yes some free games can be hacked easily but there would soon get bored and try to hack something better warrock has some hackers but the firewall will eventually block the hack then the hacker would get annoyed coz he has to make a new one and would then get bored of it -xeno

Actually he is half right. Counter strike was originally released as a free modification for half-life, so it was as such free, however they started selling it as a stand alone product and removed it. -reply by Michael
