| | What’s about LINUX?? I think the floss community is the best in the world in the free service. It is free in every sense. We can use them, or change them and start to distribute the new ones. Any one can help in this mission . It is going to be the next generation operating system. You can try it from now on. It is at your place…. Just start a walk and you will find someone who will show you how to use the free softwares. Enjoy the world. May the source with you |

definately, it's a new revolution (slow one though), Linux is open source, which means you can edit it to your own liking. Linux is also now a market; you can start your own business and customize Linux to do what you want it to do! You already "OWN" or acquired Linux (compared to Windows software, where the term OWN means you "OWN THE RIGHTS" to use it and acquired as in you own a copy but you DO NOT HAVE direct controls). This enormous project wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for Richard Stallman and his GNU/FSF Foundation and for Linus Tolvalds (Father of Linux) for writing the first Linux kernel in 1991 and submitted to the internet; the opensource community might not be possible. xboxrulz

Linux is great!!! I have recently download a live CD version of UBUNTU linux, but have not had a chance to try it out yet because i have not got home yet. I hve also download half of the needed CD images for FEDORA 3 CORE, but have also not tryed it. I MUST TRY IT!!! Linux seems to be very stable due to it not being developed in CUDOS and it is mostly free or atleast has free versions, so it makes it the perfect solution for everyone, including servers and/or networking. (Take a look at Solaris 10 for that last purpose...)

Linux has hardware support, and it is user-friendly.Linux if extremely versatile. There are easy-to-use distributions that are user friendly, customizable, and hardware supportive. Check out: SuSE , MandrakeThere are bare-boned distros such as Gentoo that allow the user to compile everything from the ground up. It is definately an adventure. My only issue with Linux is lack of support for many mainstream games and productivity programs. This is not the fault of Linux, however. There are emulators to help with this issue such as Cedega and Wine.

vettefreak90, there is no such thing as an unaltered Linux. Linux was the term for the kernel (the main body of the OS) but now it's coined as the whole system. I would recommend Yoper or SuSE. Both uses the K Desktop Environment. For the question for switching back, most users who migrated never turned back. Unless, of course, you had some Windows games that Cedega couldn't emulate. I for one kept my Windows intact for gaming; the rest is for work and other functions. Also, about hardware compatibility. 90% of all hardware is compatible to Linux. Only few things are scanners, webcams and digital cameras are the main problems. xboxrulz

WINE is a free emulator. It is also the base for CrossOver Office and Cedega. WINE stands for WINE Is Not an Emulator. Although it's free, it's not 100% compatible to softwares that are supported on Cedega or CrossOver Office. Also, you need to use a Wine configurator to configurate the settings. xboxrulz

Linux Games
Any linux gamers out there? (0) Hi, are there any linux players out there? I know there are a lot of unique linux games out there,
but they are too much to try them all (and my drive space is very limited). I'm currently
trying auteria, a nice mmorpg, also available for windows. I like it because it's not as
stupid (personal opinion), as most otherf MMORPG in which everything I do is killing monsters to get
better weapons and higher levels to kill more monsters. Of course you can do the same in Auteria, if
you want... but besides that it's really nice and you can do a lot of other thing....

If Mac Osx Is Best With Hardware, Where Does Linux Lie?
(5) Here's a good question: Is Linux better at utilizing hardware efficiently to produce optimal
performance out of your components. I hear a lot about Mac OSX being so much better with Intel
processors and yada yada, but I don't know if this is true or if a bunch of Mac elitists said a
bunch of crap and ran with it. I don't think there are actual comparable benchmarks, but if
there are, where does Linux lie in the hardware efficiency race? (Or is it dependent on which Linux
distribution it is, like how XP still beats Vista in performance?)....
What Made You Switch To Linux?
(31) I first tried Linux a few years ago, not because I was completely against Windows or anything like
that, but just because I had some free time on my hands. I started off with Mandrake 9.0 which was
very user friendly and Windows-like. After reading through a bunch of message boards and learning
which distros are good for what, I soon realized my current distro was great for Linux noobs. So
then I decided to try something a little more advanced like Slackware which I knew had a steep
learning curve. Since then I've been using Slackware as my main OS and couldn't ....
Ubuntu Linux As Free Operating System Alternative
linux operating system (46) About three years ago I decided to learn how to use Linux and after a lot of posts on a forum I
tried Ubuntu Linux as it was recommended as a good first Linux distro. Ubuntu is not the easiest
Linux distro to use but with its unmatched forum community support it is one of the easiest to learn
to use. One of the problems with learning Linux is that a lot of users have an attitude that Linux
should be a free Windows knock off which it is not. Ubuntu is build on a Linix core or kernel and is
a different Open Source and free as in to use operating system. This brings us to t....

Linux - Why It Fails As A Desktop Operating System?
(34) Linux is becoming such a craze nowadays that not even a single day passes without one or other
distribution releasing a new version. But why is it failing so miserably in the desktop arena. The
answer lies in three reasons. 1. The plethora of distributions -
Redhat,Debian,Ubuntu,Suse,Gentoo,Knoppix - everbody and his uncle is coming out with new ones. 2.
The lack of backward compatibility - I had Redhat 7.3 running. I upgraded to Redhat 9. Many
applications had to be recompiled. You ask my mom to recompile applications - She will throw out
Linux and take Windows anyday. ....
