The differences between Linux and other Unix (based) operating systems is barely noticable to the average user. I myself use freebsd which is a unix platform and gentoo which is is a linux distro. The commands might be located in slightly different places or may have different sets of arguments but the functionallity is thesame. With the GNU tools available for most platforms nowdays even these differences vanish. Most of the differences are located in the kernel design and the systems administration tools but overall they perform the same and both are very stable Both are into my favorite list I like Freebsd and Gentoo the most of all Beside those I also used, debian, slackware, mandrake, suse, arch, knoppix and openbsd befor I found the one i liked best

Linux Is Not Uni Xthats where the name comes from. Unix is older, much older than Linux so you can't really say Linux is more stable. FreeBSD is probably one of the most stable systems out there and a favorite of corporate servers. But I could never get used to the small differences between the two and always ended up using Linux. edit: ah you mention gentoo pbrugge, now that is an impressive distro!

Actually, according to Rebel Code, Linux was a mishap made from Linus Torvald's name. Alperuzi, I think you're talking about GNU -originally stood for GNU's Not Unix. Unix is probably more stable but Linux has a lot more device drivers and the like. The command line is almost identical. But personally I like Linux better, Gentoo all the way.

Also u have many linux distributions, every of that distributions do their job very good...Like live distributions KNOPPIX. Slackware, RedHat (FC2), then Mandrake (graphic is very good), then Debian (wich comes with most packages...then Suse (wich is commercial), then if u like wireless wardriving, Warlinux...and so on, so on... try to look on some desktops: linux desktopor this is novells commercial linux, wich is good also: novell linux desktop

yes, that's true, because unix is like windows, commercial os, but what da hek u talking about that linux is no so much stable like unix?? MacOS X uses linux kernel? how come that they decided to use linux kernel instead of using some commercial kernels? because linux supported G4 and other processors, so it's all about support for devices, processors, linux is much unix like, it has all funcionality like unix, the only difference is that u don't have some commercial aplications for linux, like MS office for linux. Once i installed MS Explorer, on Solaris (SUN OS 5.6), and it's worked better than Netscape Navigator. It was 5 years ago, Netscape didn't supported CSS, and Explorer did, and Explorer really worked better and faster than Netscape navigator on unix. So, it's all about writing good software, i use evry kind of OS, windows is most common, but i also like very much linux, for networking, and unix. MAC OS for graphic, because it's made for DTP , and really great for that QUOTE(antitrust @ Dec 9 2004, 11:58 AM) Linux Is Not UniX thats where the name comes from. If Mac Osx Is Best With Hardware, Where Does Linux Lie?

there are, where does Linux lie in the hardware efficiency race? (Or is it dependent on which Linux
distribution it is, like how XP still beats Vista in performance?)....
What Made You Switch To Linux?

which distros are good for what, I soon realized my current distro was great for Linux noobs. So

learning curve. Since then I've been using Slackware as my main OS and couldn't ....
Ubuntu Linux As Free Operating System Alternative
linux operating system (46) About three years ago I decided to learn how to use Linux and after a lot of posts on a forum I

Linux - Why It Fails As A Desktop Operating System?
(34) Linux is becoming such a craze nowadays that not even a single day passes without one or other
distribution releasing a new version. But why is it failing so miserably in the desktop arena. The
answer lies in three reasons. 1. The plethora of distributions -
Redhat,Debian,Ubuntu,Suse,Gentoo,Knoppix - everbody and his uncle is coming out with new ones. 2.
The lack of backward compatibility - I had Redhat 7.3 running. I upgraded to Redhat 9. Many
applications had to be recompiled. You ask my mom to recompile applications - She will throw out
