My Life
1833 slavery is abolished
1929 Martin Luther King is born
he and many others fought for our lives
finally accepted by society
but I’m still living in poverty
asking for help but they look at me dirty
so I just spill emotion in all my poetry
I ask what makes me so different
do we not walk on the same planet
and speak the same language
yet you’d prefer to lock me in a cage
and leave me there till the next ice age
we were born with one clear disadvantage
but like a letter inside a bottle
we swam to deliver one simple message
set us free or prepare for trouble
now I’m free I’m constantly reminded
“blacks stay in your place”
by those who are simply small minded
but like the phoenix we rose from the ashes
God spoke to us through the burning bushes
told us how to leave adversity behind

My life, I don’t take it for granted
and to those who fight me
I won’t easily be defeated
family has come and gone fighting for me
fighting for a better life for me
my life, my life
God I ask oh why, oh why
have you taken my loved ones
does that mean I’m the next one
living for my life
living for our life
