Ok. At this point you've already made your coice apparently. But I'm going to say this anyways because I've just gone through the same situation. I chose laptop because the pros outway the cons. The pros are much more useful than the cons are hurtful. Take upgrading the hard drive for instance. What you can do is get an external. This is much more useful anyways because God forbid you MAY be downloading music and the sort, if you happen to get a virus or malware, everything would already be backed up and if you ran into the situation of reformatting, you wouldnt have to worry about losing any files. And also, I just got a Toshiba laptop, and the memory upgrade is so easy they give instructions in the manual on how to do it. All I have to do to add memory is turn it off, take the battery off, screw the memory expansion door off, pop out the old memory, and pop in the new one. Simple right? I think so. And another thing thats great about laptops is that alot of them now come with A/V plug ins or S-Video cables so you can plug them into a TV. Lets think about this wonderful scenario....plug your laptop into lets say...errrmm....a 60 inch plasma TV? How amazing would it be to use a TV of that size and quality of picture as a computer monitor? Thats just something I want to do if I could ever get my act together and save up enough money. But anyways, I'm off to college in a year or so and I have many friends in college and most of them have laptops and they do not regret it at all. I have very few friends with desktops but some of them wish they had laptops and there are a few that say they hate laptops....these are very stubborn people that are very into power and upgrade-ability? Is that even a word? You know what I mean, lol. But anyways, if you want something that will have ALL the power and functionality that you need and still be amazingly convinient, go with the laptop. But if you one of these stubborn people that must have his power and performance, go with that desktop. But in your situation I would definately recommend the laptop. Hope this helps. Hobo.

oh yeah, sorry i forgot to add this in....i'm not really sure what your budget is like or what your parents are willing to spend, but if you can get them to go expensive or you can throw in some of your own money....looke at Alien Ware laptops....they rox. i wanted one but i needed my laptop quick and it would take 2 to 3 months for me to get it because i live in the cayman islands.....www.alienware.com check it out

Depends really on if the laptop is wireless and if the your home/school is set up for wireless. My brother got a wireless laptop and loves it to death. Definetly a plus. It's pretty much top of the line, and he's not a tech geek so he doesn't care about upgrading, not that he really could, its a laptop. I'd say go with the laptop unless you'll be doing some heavy programs or gaming, than go to a desktop.

I think since you are going to be in college and you are probably going to want to use your pc in different places of the campus i say you should get a laptop, its the best choice, b/c lets say that you want to copy the notes that your teacher is saying out loud, you can just pull your laptop out and then you can jsut start typing.

hmm iwulda said desk but o well. look at best by and any local comp stores like compusa for it. also look online. since your not going for a hardcore gaming computer id say your not gona be spendin all ur money there. your looking for just a basic plain old laptop. but seeign as basics are always boring... id go with something that can do what you want on free time aswell. im not saying go completely over blow your budget and add 2k to buy an alienware im thinking maybe a dell here as in they lean tworads basicness. but if you want to go out and above your expectations your going to have to break your budget buddy. Since macs are office computers not gaming computers go for one of there laptops. im not saying macs are my favorite as in that many games are not playable on them. if your looking to download things its not your exactly best choice. i myself personally bought a alienware laptop for 4k and it was love at first sight. i cant let go of it lol.

I would go for the notebook.
I've got to make that decision years ago and i've chosen desktop since they where cheaper and easy upgradable, but i only knew the spectacular advantages of having your computer with you all the times when i won a laptop in a contest

Now i prefer my notebook over my desktop even if the desktop is faster...

I'd go with a laptop myself, although I can see the pros and cons to either type of computer. I like being able to take my work/projects everywhere with me and upgrades are not my highest priority.

If I could get a computer for my graduation, I would so go for a laptop!

But it would have to be a really good one! I don't know much about laptops right now, like which brands are best, which ones are in... Do an Internet search for laptops with the features you know you want.

Basiclly, if you need a PC for your dorm to do work on/and gameing then get a Desktop

i definitely agree dude. but as for myself, i'd rather have a laptop. 'cause i think it is better than desktop computers. desktop computers requires a lot or space and you can't definitely take it to school with you. when you have a laptop, you can take it to school with you.. you can use it for your notes.. you can do some homeworks in it incase you forgot to do it at home.. you can have some sort of entertainment when you're alone in some place and bored.. and you can definitely take it you bed with you. well, if you were feeling a little tired and wants to use the computer in any lying position. but be careful for it not to be stolen.

In this fast-changing technological world, sometimes you are faced with some difficult choices. For instance, your current computer has matured to the ripe old age of six months and has been deemed obsolete. Now it's time to purchase a new computer and the question is, "Should I buy a laptop or a desktop?" But just because laptops are the new craze, it does not mean that you should run right out and get one. There are benefits and drawbacks that must be weighed.

Of course, the main benefit of a laptop is the portability. This can be a huge benefit, allowing you to take your computer to and from work, on planes, on camping trips, and practically anywhere else. Along with this benefit comes a large drawback. It is just as easy for someone else to walk off with it as it is for you. Laptops are stolen at an alarming rate, because they are just so easy to steal. And when that computer is stolen, not only do you lose the value of the computer, but also all of your valuable data.

Another major drawback of a laptop is that their parts are "proprietary" which means that if your laptop breaks, only the company that made it will be able to fix it, and after the warranty expires they will be very happy to charge you an exorbitant price for that service. While with a desktop computers, you are able to take advantage of your local computer store which will often fix it at a much more reasonable rate.

A third drawback to the laptop craze is that in general, laptops are far more expensive than desktop systems. For the price of an average laptop, you could purchase a much more powerful desktop. Of course, what you are paying for is the portability of a smaller design, but is that worth it? While it can be very fun to take your computer with you on a camping trip, how often do you need to type something up while fishing?

Now, the laptop is a very important part of the computer market, and I am not trying to dissuade people from buying them if they have need for them, but I have just seen far too many people dissatisfied with their laptops and wishing that they had purchased a desktop.

One main example of this group of people is college students. Often first year students purchase laptops because they plan on taking their computers to class with them and being able to do their homework anywhere on campus. The stark reality of it is that laptops get stolen far too often at college, even right out of the dorm rooms, because they’re just so portable. To add to this, I do not know a single student who uses their laptop in classes. While a noble ambition, no one actually carries through with this plan.

Laptops should be viewed as a purchase that should only be made when necessary. You would not purchase a car with 4-wheel drive (no matter how fun it looked) unless you actually had use of that feature, because otherwise it wouldn’t justify the added cost. The same is true of laptops.

i am on a tight budget on my laptop because its a little bit of short notice. ( my motherboard is on
