What Allah does say is that do not be afraid when the kafirs (non-believers) start war with you. Islam only tells Muslims to put the fire out once it has been lit up, not to light the fire ourselves because that would be a sin. Allah Himself says in the Qur'an:

"Even if thou stretch out thy hand against me to kill me, I shall not stretch out my hand against thee to kill thee, lo! I fear Allah, the Lord of the Worlds" Surah Al Maidah, Chapter 5, Verse 28
Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 6 gives the answer to the allegation that Islam promotes violence, brutality and bloodshed. It says:

"If one amongst the pagans ask thee for asylum,grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah; and then escort him to where he can be secure that is because they are men without knowledge." [Al-Qur’an 9:6]
The Qur’an not only says that a Mushriq (an person who does shirk [idol worshipper, does not accept Allah]) seeking asylum during the battle should be granted refuge, but also that he should be escorted to a secure place. In the present international scenario, even a kind, peace-loving army General, during a battle, may let the enemy soldiers go free, if they want peace. But which army General will ever tell his soldiers, that if the enemy soldiers want peace during a battle, don’t just let them go free, but also escort them to a place of security?
This is exactly what Allah (swt) says in the Glorious Qur’an to promote peace in the world.
What you think about Osma and the rest, I'm not so concerned. They are so called "Muslims". However, regarding the information above, they might call themselves Muslims but they are not Islam itself. Judge a religion by what it actually teaches, NOT by the people who follow it.
I agree that Islams aren't out to kill. But some of them are mad at us for coming into Iraq and may try to kill. I'm not saying all Islams are bad though because I have a few that are my friends. But every since the 9/11 attacks people are questionable of different people coming into the country and go paranoid and think that all are bad. I think it's wrong that this happens and something should be done but I don't think anything can until the war in Iraq is over.

This also annoys me, I have seen it mentioned as if it was fact in many places, including this forum that Islam is a violent religion. It may be because the only time people see Islam mentioned on the news it is something to do with terrorism, then they have got the idea that Islam is a religion that promotes violence. It may also be something to do with misquotes from the Qur’an, or miss understandings. There was a thread a while back where someone had quoted part of a paragraph from the Qur’an (unintentionally I think), so you couldn't get its full meaning.

And you wouldn't be mad if someone came into your country and created a civil war, which is basically what the west has done. Creating a huge power vacuum and disbanding the army wasn't the best of ideas. Muslims in the middle east seems to be much more devout, more like christians in the middle ages so they share a stronger bond between countries.

Very good quotation. I agree with you, there are good and bad peoples in every religion. Some people misinterpret their religious books and try to make and unite a group of people to fulfill their individual needs.
Economy in many of the Islamic countries is weak, which generates anger and terrorism for their survival. I am Hindu and in Huduism also their are many naxalites group, who have organised only because of unemployment.
I feel sorry for Muslims and followers of Islam. It is apparent Osama and his kind have chosen this religion to try and justify their activities. I have met many Muslims (presumably followers of Islam) that are people just like everyone else, they too are horrified by the activities of terrorists.
Unfortunately the acts of a few claiming to be followers of the religion has tainted the reputation of genuine followers. While it is hard not to be suspicious of all Muslims because of this, in most cases the suspicion is not warranted. It is no more warranted than to say that all Christians are murderers based on the activities a few people.
And for those that might have preconceived ideas about me and my motives for this post. I live in Australia, I do not follow any religion, but I respect the right of others to follow what ever religion they choose.
This whole topic kind of makes me sick to know that there are people who are crazy enough to taint the name of a religious group with blood and try to justify killing in the name of their religious beliefs. To me that makes no sense that you should go off and kill someone because someone just told you or because it is written on some holy doctrine that you should. No matter what religious beliefs you follow, killing and murdering is not holy or godly in anyway. If I where told right now by some higher being to go kill someone right now, I wouldn't because I know that life is a precious gift and only should be taken away by that higher being.
Anyway it makes me sad to know Islam, a religion that very name means Peace, is tarnished in such a way by these mad men who call themselves the servants of Allah. However, every religion has its mad men/women who try to bend religious scripts to fit/justify their own needs.
One must understand that there are religious fanatics who form a very small percentage who are however taking their religion for ransom. They have hijacked the whole idea. That had happened with Christianity, and now its happening with Islam. The silent majority must come out and condemn these people less topics like this will continue be seen in many forums online.....

Something more precious than life is the passport to heaven and getting 72(wrong amount?) virgins to fulfill your sexual needs in heaven. That's what the muslims believe.
Well......i am not here to take part in debate and i m not here to hurt any body's feeling and believes.I am a guy from India where approx 190 millions people believe in Islam, but a question rises in my mind always that why in islam males are everything and females are nothing, in pakistan, afganistan,..and other islamic territories womens are not allowed to wear a simple JEANS and in other hand a male rapes a woman and law & order forgive him!! A man who rapes, according to the laws of Islam is supposed to be sentenced to death. Rape is much less frequent in Islamic countries.
OK...you're going to laugh at this but the Islam word for 'virgin' has multiple meanings. It can also mean 'dates'. Therefore, the verses from the Koran which claim that a man will have 72 virgins in heaven, could actually have the true meaning of 72 dates. 'Dates' as in the fruit, lol.
I still don't understand where the misunderstanding here is. Islam does not say that virgins will be waiting to have sex with you in the bliss of heaven, it says you will be covered by the hospitality of love. This has nothing to do with terrorism, many other religions claim that the after life is sweater than what we live now, heaven has held the same semblance of nirvana and happiness as in any other belief.
Islam, does in no way preach violence. Just because some interpret the Koran as a way to instigate hatred towards infidels, does not mean that suddenly Islam has to fall into the mold of preconceptions. The fact of the matter is that Islam teaches peace and harmony as much as the next. How can you blame a religion for having individuals who take part in holy wars? The Crusades involved Christians vs. Muslims for land, both sides took part claiming their God had given them this path, one of blood shed.
Riots in India tear the country apart, bombings and slaughters down there could make even the worst crimes in the US seem like jokes. I have had the displeasure to know people who killed, massacred by Muslims or Hindus. Why? Because religion has different interpretations and influences on different people. Conflict is bound to happen, because we share the same Earth but hold different views we can't always prevent clashes, but that doesn't mean we blame it on a religion.

Its good to see conversations like these being struck up. Atleast a part of certain misunderstandings are being resolved. I agree with most of the above said comments, and I'd like to point out some things as well.
Humans will always be humans (unless we evolve to another species :/), and thus the difference in ideologies will be prevailent. This however, is no excuse to disregard the basic foundations of humanity. There will always be extremes, and therefore extremists. People will try to mutate and violate the laws and codes of religion to their own selfish desires, ofcourse which is not acceptable, not just in Islam, but in other religions as well.
I am a Muslim, and a part of the non-extreme. The way I see things, these terrorist bombings and such are not Jihad (Holy war). Islam does not tell a Muslim to kill innocent civilians. Still, the pages of history are splattered with the blood of countless, nameless innocent souls caught in the mid-riff of extremes. This has to stop. And unless we start to understand the reasons and means of peaceful existence, its going to be very hard indeed. I just hope that the higher ups realize it before its too late and we have another major world war. With the current economic and political situation worldwide today, we sure are walking on pretty thin ice.

I do not know who told Mr. Jon such kinds of things. Before that let me tell you something. I do not know much about politics. In my short head it would not catch. So I avoid the topic whether Islam is Terrorist or not. Let me tell you what Islam means, Islam mean Peace and Love. And I request all the members do not comment any thing unless you know much better. Mr. Striker describe it pretty well. To learn Islam, it is not a very tough thing. Just read the Holy QURAN. I am sure in your neighbor library it is available in English Language. However What i know about sexual relation on Islam is. Islam dose not allow you to make love with other then your wife. It is so strict that if you do so then you will get the hight punishment. And Islam consider it is a greatest SIN. So how can you assume that to fulfill some one sexual need in haven you get that many virgin or what ever.I believe Mr. Jon say it because of lack of knowledge about Islam. Starting off, to be quite honest, I'm so sick to death about hearing about terrorist attacks
occuring overseas. For example, a recent one was reported on tv that authorities had arrested 20
muslims. Before some people go on about how this religion is bad, and what they are doing is wrong,
and so forth, pretty much every religion has their type of weirdos and crackheads. In many cases,
religion is not what fuels the fire, its those that are really greedy within the ranks, you got

Anti-terrorism has clearly become a focal issue in many governments. I live in America, where the
September 11 attacks brought such change as I have never seen in my lifetime. Americans reacted
with patriotism, or so it was viewed at the time. Muslim citizens and residents almost immediately

I don't understand what is meant by "the war against terrorism." Terrorism is not an army
you can fight in any arena. It is calculated random acts of violence in the name of religious
beliefs. The only way to fight it is to be prepared and defend yourself against it. Terrorism went
on in the Holy lands long before written history and still is. If people who should be experts on

I will speak on the three religion Judaism , Christianity and Islam. I. God is the same for the
three religion since HE is the God of Abraham. The name of God depends on language. For example the
Arabic Christian use word Alah as the name in God as the Muslim because God in Arabic is Alah. But
