I would like to buy a laptop, and these are the two I have it narrowed down to.

Right, upgrade the processor in exchange for a gb of ram, since for one thing, ram in laptops is more easily upgraded and another with only 1.8ghz your not getting the full potential of 3gb of ram in a laptop (just my opinion)

I would get the Dell and a wireless N card for the future if possible. It wouldn't hurt to get a better processor. And unless your running a 64-bit OS, your not gonna see more than 3.5~ gigs, so 3gb is fine in my opinion. You won't know the difference between 3 and 4. Try to get a 3 year inhome warranty if it isn't too much of a difference. I do warranty work for dell and you never know when something might crap-out. Warranties are always something to not skimp on.

I beef up the processor to at least 2.0Ghz to help utilize the 3GB of RAM and I have to disagree with with the wireless N card as I been hearing to many problems on that wireless band. Also that HP is a x64 that alone will limit the software you can have installed on that computer. So your better off with the Dell, and find how much it would cost to downgrade to XP from vista as well unless you want to have a Vista laptop.
