How Do I Start?

bluesierra
So I just got my new website with trap17, but looking at the cpanel, I have no idea how to start building my site. With all the other sites Ive built, it has been pretty easy to learn. With this though, I dont know what to click to start? I catch on to things pretty easily once I know half of what im doing. So, what icon do I click on the cpanel to get started putting things on my site?

Well if you have scripts you need to upload them, this is easy(well, I think)
Just go into the FTP manager and put your scripts where they should be(I have no idea where),
If you need a forum/blog setup, just go into "Fantanstico" which in an option near the bottom of your cPanel, you have many many things to choose from there.

To get started in your cpanel log in and go to File Manager. Then open up the folder 'public_html' This is where you can upload your html files. Once they are in there you can edit them by clicking on the file name and edit. You can edit them and save and everything should be up there. This is the very basics of what you can do. For easier access to your files you could download an FTP program like SmartFTP.
http://www.smartftp.com/
If you go into your cpanel, click "FTP Manager" and find your information needed to log into your account from your computer instead of your cpanel. I hope this has helped.

Using SmartFTP is prob the easiest and the best way to upload your files. Thats what I do and there is basically no way to upload any easier.

Well I figured out how to build my site now. So I made some changes to my front page and saved them but when I visited my site I still had that dang "Welcome to your Site...." and all that other stuff on there, but none of the stuff I put on it. Whats the deal?

Make sure that the file name is index.html or index.php or something like that. Also make sure that the file you uploaded is in the public_html folder because that is what everyone can see. If you put it in the main directory you won't see it but if you have it in public_html you should be fine.

Are you using Fantastico or those "packages" that come with cpanel?
To me, looks like you do.
Then forget about what those previous posters were telling you (I asume you didn't upload you site via ftp, too) and do the following:

1. go to fantastico (under preinstalled scripts)

2. choose what you want to install onto your site (e.g., phpnuke)

3. choose your root domain name (e.g. bluesierra.trap17.com)

4. enter directory name (name only)

5. enter admin username and pass

6. set up other options as you please

7. click install phpnuke (if you have chosen phpnuke)
*if you didn't choose phpnuke those steps might go a different way, but I hope you'll figure it out by yourself

8. once it's done click finish

Your site should be available at http://bluesierra.trap17.com/somedir, where somedir is the directory you have choosen in step 4

I hope this was helpful. If not, ask again. Sorry if I completely missed the point, and you were doing it like previous posters said.

I guess it works either way because everything works fine in public_html for me as well. Because it is anything to be viewed in public and it is normally html lol I have never tried any other folder but when you said that I tried it out. www and public_html is exactly the same thing. I clicked on the www directory and it took me to everything inside public_html so I guess it doesn't really matter which you use because it all takes you to the same place. Just make sure it is one of those two. smile.gif

This Tutorial explains how to do that by altering the filename the server looks for first.

It is easy. Works great.
