Thanks for this. I often install programs for one-time use and sometimes I get too lazy to uninstall them. It really agitates me for some reason when I open up the start menu > programs (already cluttered as it is) and see ten or twelve randomly highlighted entries. Hopefully this will fix that.

Here is a even simpler solution (by my opinion of course):
  1. Right click on Start button
  2. Click on Properties in the right-click popup menu to open up the Properties window
  3. Select Advanced Tab (you should find it below the title bar)
  4. Deselect the "Highlight newly installed programs" checkbox
  5. Press OK and off you go

The default speed of the Start Menu is pretty slow, but you can fix that by editing a Registry Key.
Fire up the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control
Panel \ Desktop \ MenuShowDelay By default, the value is 400. Change this to a smaller
value, such as 0, to speed it up. If this doesn't work for some reason, then you might try the
following: Navigate to Display Properties then Appearance then Effects and turn off the option
