Disconnections are sometimes and usually due to the faulty telephone wiring in your home, or somewhere between your home and the telephone company or ISP. Also, since you are using 56k modem, your internet connection might be anytime disconnected due to the fact of noise in your telephone cable. Noise is generated when there is interference in your telephone cable. That includes magnetic elements, and can also be caused by picking up your phone while you are connected to the internet. Hence if possible, avoid all these. Broadband on the other hand, is not vulnerable to noise as easy as 56k connection. You may still talk on the phone while connected in an ADSL network.

Extra Tips: (Gah, I didn't notice you solved your problem)

I used to have dial-up... Untiil now. I now use Broadband DSL and I'm happy with it! smile.gif Nothing can truly boost dial-up speed efficiently. You try cache-ing programs when you surf. It just gives you an illusion that your surfing speeds are faster, but in fact, the files are stored in your harddrive for faster access. If you want better speed in the download area, you can get download managers that can connect to different servers simultaneously. Another solution is to get broadband, but I know some countries don't really have it cheap or have it at all, so I can understand your situation if you don't live in a "digitalized" country.

Ways to boost internet connection speed:

P2P software - The so called "addon" accelerators don't work very well. Instead, disable sharing or uploading.

Downloading from HTTP or FTP servers: Have multiple connections. Use a Download Manager such as GetRight.

Browsing the Internet: Use Mozilla Firefox. Type about:config in the address bar. Change the following values:

browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction = 3
dom.popup_maximum = Any number less than 5. 3 is recommended.
network.http.max-connections = (Dial-Up/DSL internet: 48; Cable/T1 Internet: 96)
network.http.max-connections-per-server = (Slow: 16/Fast 32)
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy = 8
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server= 8
network.http.pipelining = True
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests = 8
nglayout.initialpaint.delay = 0

That should speed it up a lot.
