Freecycle (http://www.freecycle.org/) is a very nice initiative and is spreading very fast all around the world. Its a new way of recycling stuffs by donating to others.

What is freecycle?
Freecycle is a group(started via various means...) that matches people who have things they need to get rid of with people who can use them. Their goal is to keep usable items out of the landfill by recycling them, in the form of donating to others (something that is of no use to you, can be of some great use to somebody). By using what we already have on this earth, we reduce consumerism, manufacture fewer goods, and lessen the impact on the earth. Another benefit of using Freecycle is that it encourages us to get rid of junk that we no longer need and promote community involvement in the process.

If you are in Bangalore, there is a freecycle group operating via Yahoo Groups - freecycleblr@yahoogroups.com
And for chennai - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freecycle_chennai/

So... you can donate stuffs, get stuffs etc all for free. There are some protocols to be followed, which you will know once you are part of the group.

I have been using Freecycle groups over here in the UK for a while now. It is amazing some of the stuff that people put on there, and how quickly it gets taken! I suppose it just proves that one man's trash is another man's treasure. I've put all sorts of bits of furniture, old TVs, and anything else I find that is useful to someone and seems a shame to throw away. Of course, it is also a lot more environmentally friendly than if everyone threw everything they didn't need into landfill.

I've joined a Local Freecycle group and look forward to enjoying the membership. Both giving and receiving.

Only problem is the closest group is 200 km away.

True. Its a great thing that they have started It. I am also part of the local group (Bangalore City ) and there are many members.. and the numbers are growing rapidly. I was wondering how so many things would have gone to waste, if not for this group. I have seen people offering watches, speakers, web-cams, furnitures etc etc... Nice work. Very happy to hear that you are also part of a group.

The best thing that you could do is to start one group and take the initiative in your local.... I am sure, there are so many people to help you out.

That is a pretty neat way of saving trash. Not only does it save space but if you were to lose interest in something someone else can easily pick it up for themselves. The thing is sometimes these things can be donated to the Salvation Army or Goodwill for someone in need too. I guess it depends on what you want to freecycle or give away. I really like this concept though, I am joining the one here in my area as well.
