This site offers free SSL certificates. It's a nice thing, in fact they can cost at least 100US$ or more. Then this isn't a trial version, but it is completely free. FREE SSL

Not good a free service that askes for your passport driver license information...sounds kind of flakey to me:

i have to agree getting free security for your network is kind of questionablem i wouldn't do it, by paying cash at a registered wesbite that sells them that would be the better way to go.

That's cool but it sounds kind of fishy to me, I think they want to get some background information on you with your passport to make sure that you seem okay before they give it to you, but I wouldn't trust things that only seem okay anyways.
Nice find though, SSL certificates are expensive, but I don't need one anyways...

I am not really sure if I have been victimized or not, I would hope not. My conversation with StartCom just did not seem normal. It seemed like the Drivers License and Passport copies were not enough proof for them and the process was being intentionally "stung out".

It escalated into needing to verify a LAN line phone number (my home VoIP phone wouldn't cut it). Then I realized through social engineering I was exposing my genealogy. Things just weren't adding up. I mean I have purchased SSL certificates from GeoTrust and they just call and take a voice recording and that is it. It became apparent that I have given WAY TOO MUCH personal information than what was necessary, and I have sent it overseas!

So I attempted to search for more information on their company. I guess if they were wanting to make sure a SSL certificate wasn't misused, I guess I was searching for some proof that all my personal identity wouldn't be mis-used like for identity theft or any other illicit means.

This is all I could come up with.

1. There are only about 45 unique websites that link to them on the whole Internet. Many of those are from other pages that they have themselves

2. Searches on identity theft...It seems that I have basically now handed everything over to them to wreak havoc on my identity.

3. I have sent emails to both Microsoft and Mozilla asking them to confirm they are indeed in the process of auditing StartCom. They have not yet confirmed or denied this.

When you put that together with the fact that I am an American, and an international target. The only real conclusion is that I may have just been an unwitting participant in a huge scam, identity theft ring, or yes...just taken advantage of my Terrorists via a social engineering ploy with the lure of a free SSL Certificate.

The risk factors involved are just too great for the lure of a free SSL cert to hang on my OWA to protect my employees 6 mailboxes. I just did not realize it until it was too late.

I think I have made a huge mistake sending my most personal of information to this company, and I don't want others to do the same.
