| | Microsoft released a few months a go "Windows Defender beta." It is a free tool that lets you track down and delete all unwanted spyware on your computer. It is very useful and better than those other spyware programs that you have to buy. It includes a "Quick Scan" if you don't have time to scan your whole computer. You can also set it to scan on regular times and days of the week. The only thing i don't like about it is that the Full Scan takes about 2 hours to complete. But overall, it is a very usefull download. |

Just go to microsoft.com and click the downloads link. Think program is a lot better than the other programs that i used before. It gets all the spyware on your computer and it makes your computer a whole lot faster. The Quick Scan is pretty quick. Like 15-30 minutes.

Just remember to keep them up to date and check for updates everytime you are going to use the programs.

SpyBot S&D pretty good IMO but, you have to use at least one other app with it (because each application detects different Spyware). Personally I love S&D (although Ad-Aware is better). You don't have to but, I would recommend you try and install Spybot S&D again because your problem may have been a bug in the program. If you don't use Spybot S&D at least use Ad-Aware, I personally used Microsoft Antispyware (Pre-Windows Defender) Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware for quite sometime and they have not caused any problems. Unfortunetly I could not get Windows Defender to work properly when I tried to install it today. But, like I said, to each his (or her!) own I guess.

Do not go for Microsoft Anti-Spyware category. They are real spyware-protectors themselves. Just to know the truth, clean your computer with the so-called anti-spy product from Microsoft and then install spybot SD or any other known good anti-spyware. You can see how many spyware had been left on your system even after a successful Microsoft cleaning. Anyways "spybot-search & destroy" is highly recommended.

I've used the Windows Defender Beta 2 before and I found it not to be that useful, especially against spyware and adware... When I got infected by adware and spyware, Windows Defender just pop up and ask whether to remove those trojans, I choose yes and it appeared to removed them and ask me for permission to restart my computer... I restarted them and when it boot up, the trojans start appearing again and Windows Defender ask me the same old thing... I had no choice but to install my other anti-virus software and then it gets too messy and I reformat my entire computer...

Do you have any experience with a program called Edwido? I used it once, and from their website, it performed an real-time scan of not only my computer's hard drive, but also of memory, looking for "worms," which are apparently a different category of "malware" than what is commonly referred to as "spyware." I don't know if it still available free, as AVG (who distribute the only free anti-virus program) had purchased Edwido, and was going to distribute it as some sort of paid product.
