It's actually not that hard to set up a webhost. all you really need is to get some shitbox computer like a celeron 500. MS XP IIS can be used (since it already comes with XP) to set up all the sites. The hardest part is actually maintaining the thing.
This is assuming you are just playing around. If you are serious about setting up hosting, then there is much more you need to worry about. You would likely want to get rid of IIS and get apache, probably install linux, learn how to use both apache and linux, get a decent connection with good upstream, and a decent computer. There is a lot of other stuff to consider too... Plus, paying for this stuff can be a *BLEEP*... Beyond that, you would be looking at temperature controlled rooms, backup power supplies, etc. Way too much for a hobby.
many peole search for free hosting. i was also in search of free hosting but not now. i found trap17. i was hosted by some another hosting company before which company i call 24hrsdown.com coz it was down many times. i also tried to have a paid account and i filled the form seing 6.5 $/month and setup fee=0$ but while billing they cut off 156$ from my credit card. so i am afraid now a days to pay to any company. i cannot more then 2$/month in hosting.

Just kinda seconding the opinions...no, it's not hard. There's one site that I belong to...and whenever I chat w/ the guy, he's seems to be always working on his server.
Trap 7 is the best Free Web Hosting Service I've ever come across, I have been searching for weeks try to find a reliable Free Hosting that provides mysQl, but none do, except for Trap17!
I already tried alot of free webhosting providers ( best one yet was anyxhost.com, but they stopped all of the sudden) and Im eager to try Trap17, because I am starting my own little business in webdesign/ webdeveloping, and I could use all those extras! If it is as goed as said, I think I finally found Home
Me and my friend will be starting our own hosting company (paid only... wont be as good at trap or the other sites he owns) and we will be getting a Virtual Private Server (VPS) to start off as it it cheaper, then when we are bringing in enoughf money to cover the cost of a dedicated server, we will upgrade, we will also be doing image hosting too...
Its not that hard, all you need to do is rent a server (or run your own, rentings cheaper) running cPenel and Web Host Manager (WHM) or Plesk and make a good site with good support and you have to make sure that your server does not go down of corse. As we are still in school, if the server goes down, we wont know till we get home, but my bros m8 made us a PHP script that checks the status of the server and sends an e-mail to a special address which will send a message to my mobile, the script will be on another server of corse... Thats about it, I know i went on about this, even though it may not be related to the first post, but eh...
I'm sitting here, posting away, trying to get a chance to try Trap17. It's so hard to find a good free host these days. It's almost worth your time just to pay a few bucks. Who knows ... we'll see how Trap17 is. My hopes are high.

Well, I have heard a lot of great things about free hosting and it really is a matter of being able to find the right one. I suppose it helps to get advice from message boards and other people will a lot of experience, which is what I am trying to do now. Ha! But yeah, theres a lot of cool stuff out there I want to learn but I have so little time with school and all. Sigh...
QUOTE(neth @ Dec 30 2004, 08:51 PM) it is rather easy to set up a web host all you have to do is buy a resseller package off of a company such as heart internet. You can even buy resseller packages off ebay for really cheap prices and they have decent offers with unmetered bandwidth and space. ive seen one that has everything unmetered cPanel control panel 9 fantastico etc for only £10 a year. then yo just have to buy a domain name and set up packages
Ok this is how trap17 works.
When you get 15 posts, you are eligible for package one hosting. However, that doesn't mean you just post a couple of words here and there! You must post over 300 charecters in each post to count as a real post and to rize your post count. The post must have content, for instance, like my post you are reading now! In order for you to get your hosting, you MUST stay active! This means posting a couple of GOOD posts every week, preferably more than 5 posts per week! When you reach 25 posts, you are eligible for DOMAIN HOSTING. Domain hosting allows you to host your own domain and mailservers. If you do not have a domain, you may also use uni.cc domains (www.uni.cc) and cjb.net domains (www.cjb.net). Neverless, you still MUST post actively in the forums! The way you request hosting is simple. You must first have the sufficient amount of posts. After, you go to the forum "Request Hosting" Over there, you should read all the stickies posted. (In case you don't know, stickies are posts that will NOT BE BUMPED by new posts.) After, follow the format below: Sub-domain or domain name (Example: http://example.trap17.com, or http://example.com) Name/Nickname Nationality Theme of website Reason for choosing us Confirmation you understand the rules and agree to stay active and contribute to the community. Package You want After you have posted, you will have to wait until the administrator to approve your account. This usually takes less than a day. Final step! Go to the process link that the adminstrator will provide, and create your hosting account using the form. (The script was written by the talented administrator!) You are finished! REMEMBER TO STAY ACTIVE! It helps trap17 because you will direct ad revenues! If you have a more specific question, you can reply to this topic! If you are feeling generous and want to give me a reputation for my hard work, feel free to do so! Remember, I am not here to try to get reputation, I am here to help everyone with my prior knowledge, with a little bit of research! Good luck! Best Regards, Johnny ~ Dooga (oh yah! 2150 charecters)
Well my friend told me about iconrate.net which is a little better than trap in space but only 3 MySQL DBs which is a biggy for me. Plus there community cannot compare to traps so I stick. There fore I also say that trap17 is Thee best free webhosting on the net.
the amont of places ive been to for hosting, and the amount of places ive ben let down, ive must of posted bout a thousand posts to make hosters happi. if i had a good host i wud keep posting and posting cos ibelive they deserve it
