My favorite OS......
If talking about windows then Windows 98.....
And if about Linux then Red Hat.....
Because in my view this two are best in all sense.

The best OS ever made by MS is WinXP SP2, and the most 'eye-candy-ish' OS is Windows Vista.
For Linux, i would choose Ubuntu Linux
I hate Macs for some reason.
And Solaris is too expensive.
My Overall Favourite would be XP, it has good management on RAM and CPU usage, good Compatibility, and good Virus protection

I have been using Kubuntu (same as Ubuntu but with KDE as the window manager) and I think it is much better than Windows. Having used every version of Windows since 3.1 it was such an eye opener to move to the world of Linux. The only problem I have is the last kernel upgrade won't correctly mount anything, and is now happily destroying my HDD sad.gif Apart from that, its been great, and the fact that the vast majority of software is completely free with great community support beats Microsoft hands down.

I use windows because its easy and comes with my computer, i'm too lazy to try linux as this is my only computer and not willing to lose everything. The only real reason I stick with windows though is its compatability with 95% of all applications I use. If Mac was able to run exe files without emulation or a higher load on CPU there is a high chance I'd switch over. I've only used mac for about 10 minutes total, but the time i spent on there i was impressed at how fast it ran (I don't think it was that good either). And like I said, I'm too lazy for linux. When I get a new laptop in a year or two it will be windows, but I will reformat and put XP on it because I don't like vista at all since it takes up way too much memory.

If you are just going to try Linux, use a Livecd, I like Knoopix Live CD, but I have used Linux before and I love it.

I use Knoppix 5.1 on a Live CD. It detects virtually all hardware and sets it up. It takes about 2-3 minutes on my computer to boot up completely. I can't wait until 5.2 is released. Supposedly it is going to be released sometime this month! *gets excited*

I been using Windows XP since long and inspite of all the lots of problems i come across, I find it quite stable and nice to use. Recently tried Ubuntu and was surprised it detected my sound and all other drivers prior to installation. The problem is I am a home user and terminal becomes such a big headache for a non programmer like me. I would love to use the Mac but i dont think i would use it for long since i am a gaming person

I am still using Windows XP and I want change it probably I am not even considering to transfer to the linux. As I don't need it and XP evethough I don't prefer it is to some extent good Operating System. Also I would like to point out that if you have Linux you don't need virus protection program. And About vista eventhough Microsoft is stating that it is completely newly written I would like to point out that it is still using large parts of XP coding however they have rewritten many very important parts and many critical system parts have been transfered out of kernel so to say the architecture of Vista provides more security then that of Windows XP. But it is still more or less Cosmetical update. I don't like linuxes as they are like to play hard tog et. Although it offeres more ability and control over your own computer I really don't need that much and Windows allows me at the moment apporximately the same amount of control i would need.

Personally, I'm using Windows XP SP2 and on some off times, I fool around with Kubuntu.

I used to praise that Windows 98SE was the best, most stable OS that we had in the Windows world. I never looked at Linux and am still shy of learning a new OS. However, I jumped into XP and the leap wasn't quite that bad. Being hesitant to upgrade to SP2 at first, I am now one of many users that find XP SP2 as the new stable, most compatible Windows OS out there.

There are a ton of Linux distributions out there, appealing to many, many tastes. The problem is hardware support. I run two laptops and sometimes Linux doesn't recognize the hardware I do have... which lead to experimenting with sUSE 10 a dead issue after hours and hours of trying to use ndiswrapper to get my wireless networking up and running... and failing. I jumped to FreeSpire because I liked the eye candy, but again I couldn't get it to recognize some of my hardware, notably the fact that I had it on a tablet PC and not being able to use it as a tablet anymore. I'm running Kubuntu now and just for eye candy and experimentation with Linux, which supports all of my hardware and even Beryl, which is a fun way to tell Vista "In your face!" tongue.gif

I hear a lot of great stuff about the Ubuntu distributions, and I can safely support them as one of the better Linus OSs that you can use.

So, in a nutshell, the "best" OSs would have to be Windows XP SP2, Kubuntu 7.04, and Windows 98SE.

But that's what worked for me. This topic is rather subjective. cool.gif

About three years ago I decided to learn how to use Linux and after a lot of posts on a forum I
tried Ubuntu Linux as it was recommended as a good first Linux distro. Ubuntu is not the easiest
Linux distro to use but with its unmatched forum community support it is one of the easiest to learn
to use. One of the problems with learning Linux is that a lot of users have an attitude that Linux
should be a free Windows knock off which it is not. Ubuntu is build on a Linix core or kernel and is

Linux is becoming such a craze nowadays that not even a single day passes without one or other
distribution releasing a new version. But why is it failing so miserably in the desktop arena. The
answer lies in three reasons. 1. The plethora of distributions -
Redhat,Debian,Ubuntu,Suse,Gentoo,Knoppix - everbody and his uncle is coming out with new ones. 2.
The lack of backward compatibility - I had Redhat 7.3 running. I upgraded to Redhat 9. Many
applications had to be recompiled. You ask my mom to recompile applications - She will throw out
Linux and take Windows anyday. ....

I think Linux sweeping the world was a bit of a premature prediction (what everyone in relatively
intellectual circles was saying in the late 90's and very early 2000's). Microsoft with a
true oligopoly that has crushed the chances of any third party OS, like BeOS, one of the most
promising OSes of the 90's IMHO. Linux and Unix really need a serious internal structural revamp
(like the NT system does of course), perhaps even a change to a server based OS; I guess that would
sort of be a total rewrite of all the code though Copied from "Olorix" on http://fo....
